I am re-reading a brilliant book called "Earth Harmony: Places of Power, Holiness and Healing" by Nigel Pennick. If you are interested in understanding the craft of earth harmony, as the author puts it, this is a must read. The book is loaded with feng shui-like examples from all over the world - from Madagascan Vintana to Hindu Vastuvidya to the old European system of Location.
Once you have been applying feng shui in your home for a while, you begin to see that every ancient culture has its own form of balancing earth energies and on a deeper level they all connect. It does not matter if your symbols come from the classical feng shui lore or if they are rooted in the deep Celtic symbolism; what matters is that you really feel connected to their energy.
Why do you need to use powerful symbols in your home? Why do you need to be surrounded by healthy, balanced energies in order to fell healthy and happy? Well, the popularity of the ancient art and science of feng shui is, in itself, the answer to that question, but let us look into how Nigel Pennick formulates it.
"The attainment of the ideal equilibrium, both internally and in one's relationship to the surrounding environment with all that means is to be in the right place at the right time facing the right direction, doing the right thing. It is the achievement of perfect harmony in all things."
Along with the desire for harmony, a considerable part of the body of energetic symbolism of any ancient culture is dedicated to protection from various energies. The same principle applies to the ancient art and science of feng shui.
Some of the most popular feng shui cures are the feng shui cures for protection and good luck. Should you look into feng shui tips for protection? Do you really need them?
Well, you might not need protection cures per se (hopefully!); but it is always a good idea to strengthen the energy around you, and especially so the energy of your front door.
However, the desire for protection should not come form fear, but from a basic understanding that there is a wide variety of energies all around us, and some of those energies are best left outside our homes.
Whenever you are applying feng shui it is very important to apply it intelligently, meaning if you do not understand a feng shui cure or just do not like it, trust your judgment and find a different way to achieve the same result. Do not blindly go, out of fear, for some exotic cure that makes no sense to you.
For example, in traditional Chinese feng shui the bagua mirror is often used outside homes for protection. Should you use a bagua mirror above your front door? It is certainly only up to you to decide, but I know I wouldn't.
What I would do, though, is understand what the bagua mirror does, feng shui-wise, and then look for a visually acceptable way to substitute it.
The "Earth Harmony" book (find it on amazon) has many old European designs for protection that can work beautifully with the architectural style of your home. They are beautiful, powerful and full of nostalgic mystery.
Smart feng shui is always applied in a subtle way. After all, feng shui is energy work and energy is not limited to one specific expression. Explore the many ways you can empower yourself and your home, and do not hesitate to use symbols from various cultures in your feng shui work.
Know that only by making powerful choices aligned with your own energy will you start sensing real changes in the feng shui of your home.
