Foca Laundry Detergents
Foca laundry detergent is manufactured by Fábrica de Jabón la Corona, a Mexican company founded in 1920 in Mexico City that produces household cleaning products, toothpaste, and edible cooking oils. The company began exporting products in 1986 and those items are sold throughout Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and North America.
Amazingly, the company does no direct advertising and relies on word-of-mouth and customer demand to sell products. Along with Foca, the company exports the laundry detergents Roma and Blanca Nieves in liquid and powder formulas and Zote Laundry Bars and Zote Laundry Flakes to the United States.
The Spanish word foca translates to "seal," the mascot on the label. It is phosphate-free and biodegradable. The product is safe for all washable fabrics.
Foca Liquid Laundry Detergent
Foca liquid is the only Jabón detergent recommended for use in high-efficiency (HE) machines. The liquid formula produces fewer suds, making it safe for front-loading machines and high-efficiency top load washers. It can, of course, be used in standard washers as well. Foca is also effective for use as a pre-treater to remove stains before washing.
Listed ingredients are:
- Anionic and non-ionic tensoactives
- Water hardness removers
- Optical whitener
- Blue dye 199
Foca liquid laundry detergent is available in one liter and one-gallon containers. Unfortunately, the plastic bottles are not marked with a recycling symbol and no information is available on what type of plastic is used for the containers. Foca liquid can be found in some mass merchandisers in the United States, Latin grocery stores and online.
Foca Powdered Laundry Detergent
Foca powdered laundry detergent is phosphate-free, biodegradable, and safe to use with a septic system. The powder works well in all water temperatures and is safe for all washable fabrics. It should only be used in standard washers.
Listed ingredients are:
- Cleaning agents—lineal anionic surfactant and proteolytic enzyme
- Water softener—aluminosilicates and silicate
- Soil suspending agent – C.M.C.
- Optical brightener
Foca powdered laundry detergent comes in a plastic bag in a variety of sizes. The bag can be difficult to use without spilling so transferring the powder to a sealable plastic storage container is recommended. The powdered formula can be found in some U.S. mass merchandisers, Latin grocery stores, and online.
Product Reviews and Laundry Recommendations
Both the powder and liquid formulas were effective in removing average levels of soil and stains on laundry. The liquid is much easier to use than the powdered formula and can be used as a stain pre-treater. When Foca was used as a pre-treater on an oily stain on cotton muslin by working in a bit of the liquid into the fabric and letting it work for fifteen minutes before washing with the same detergent, the stain was removed.
The powdered formula was tested on laundry with average soil and a few grass stains. It worked well in removing the stains. The package recommends using one cup of detergent which seems way too much. The test was run using about 1/2 cup of the powder in a standard top-load washer. The Foca powder formula is not recommended for high-efficiency machines due to the number of suds it produces. Opt for the liquid formula that is safe for both front load and top load HE machines.
Foca is an effective lower-priced laundry detergent for handling most laundry needs.
