Adorable Stylish Handbag or Lunch Sack - Free Pattern

A simple bag made with a canvas base fabric decorated with a print fabric and a solid color fabric.
A strong, durable bag with many visual options. Small Handbag or Lunch Sack Made with This Free Sewing Pattern. Debbie Colgrove, Licensed to About.com

If your looking for a bag that is a perfect size to tote your lunch or use as a small handbag, this bag may be just perfect for you or a perfect gift.

When I get an idea I run with it. For this bag, I intended to make a colorful lunch bag. I think the most difficult part of making the bag was deciding which fabrics I wanted to use. A friend dropped over as soon as the bag was finished and loved it so much I gave it to her, thinking I can make another. What I didn't expect was how she changed...MORE it into her handbag on the spot... and it worked great for her idea of using it as a pocketbook.

The bag is made on top of a canvas base fabric using a novelty print and a solid color durable fabric such as Duck. The novelty print gives you all kinds of options for the final appearance of the bag. It could easily be made with a child's print such as Thomas the Tank Engine or Cinderella for a durable lunch bag for a child. You could also use up orphaned quilt squares to make a great bag.

Consider making this bag as a gift. Include plastic containers for a sandwich and things like fruit cocktail. Add a thermos to keep beverages cold. If you double the goodies for inside the bag, there is always a set available while one is in the dishwasher. Think how many of those plastic sandwich bags you are keeping out of the landfill... and the sandwich is a lot less likely to get squished!

Free Full Size Backpack Pattern With Pockets and Padded Straps

Free Back Pack Sewing Pattern for Back to School and more
Save Money Sewing Your Own Backpack and Know It Will Be Durable! Free Pattern to Sew a Full Sized Backpack with Pockets and Padded Straps. Debbie Colgrove, Licensed to About.com

I wish I had this pattern when my children where in school. It seemed like the store bought backpacks only lasted a couple of months and I was either mending the store bought backpack or searching for a new one in the "off season" for backpack shopping. Off season backpack shopping can be as bad as bathing suit shopping in January in the northeast!

A back pack is a great way to have a day out and still keep your hands free. Since you are the designer, you could construct this bag out of...MORE quilted fabric for an insulating quality to carry a picnic lunch. This free backpack sewing pattern creates a back pack that is approximately 17" tall by 14" wide. Large enough for your carrying needs... and as long as you don't fill it with bricks, it should be easy to carry.
The free pattern features two exterior pockets. One is a large flat pocket and the outer pocket is more of a pouch style pocket with an elastic top. You can easily add more pockets by adding another layer inside of the front and back sections and adding zipped lining pockets.
Padded straps prevent a weighted backpack from cutting into your shoulders and makes it more comfortable to carry for a length of time. These padded straps use a combination of the same fabric as the body of the back pack and adjustable webbing straps.
Use quality thread and always back-stitch to have a strong durable backpack that you can depend on for all of your carrying needs.
