Everyone knows the Margarita, that refreshing drink and must-have summer cocktail that can be made in so many ways and take on so many personalities. The great thing about the original Margarita is that it's one of the easiest recipes to make from scratch.

Notice that there are only three ingredients required for the Margarita. There is no mystery and it's not complicated. When the tequila, triple sec, and lime are balanced, it is a very refreshing cocktail. This drink is far too easy and delicious to justify buying a bottled margarita mix.

There are three basic ways you can serve this cocktail: straight up (as in this recipe), on the rocks, or frozen. The next question is whether to rim your glass with salt, sugar or to leave it bare.

The possibilities are endless and, no, a margarita glass is not required.

What You'll Need

How to Make It

  1. If desired, salt the rim of a chilled margarita glass.
  2. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Strain into the prepared glass with or without fresh ice.
  5. Garnish with the lime wedge.

More Tips for Making the Perfect Margarita

Choosing a good tequila is an essential key to creating a superior Margarita. It is the main ingredient and a cheap, low-quality tequila will only bring the drink down.

Pick up a medium- to high-end blanco or reposado tequila for this cocktail.

This recipe uses a bit more lime than triple sec though some people prefer to keep the two even. If you would like to make it a little sweeter, add a dash of simple syrup or agave nectar.

How Strong is the Margarita?

Using the recipe above and assuming that the tequila is 80 proof, the Margarita is not what we would consider a low-proof cocktail. It would be around 27% ABV (54 proof). If you serve it on the rocks, it will dilute a bit with time.

Alternative Margarita Recipe:

This margarita recipe uses sour mix and is another good, fresh recipe that you may want to try. Sour mix is very easy to make from scratch and have at the ready so you can mix up as many margaritas as you need.

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • Splash of lemon or lime juice
  • 3 ounces sour mix
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Salt or sugar to rim the glass (optional)
