Gemma began her professional career in 2005 when she started working for the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She then went on to run her own dog business, Just Dogs, in Edinburgh for 10 years and enjoyed fundraising and volunteering for a number of local dog rescues.

For several years she traveled around Europe with her rescue dog Annie and wrote for pet-related publications before settling down in Italy, where she continues to write for various publications. Today, Gemma writes about gardening for The Spruce, as well as content on dogs, cats, and other animals for The Spruce Pets.


Gemma received a Bachelor of Arts at Queen Margaret University in 1998.
