The most popular answer on the poll: crochet patterns. So, if you're looking for a gift that the recipient will be sure to appreciate, crochet patterns are a pretty safe bet. Consider giving any of the following:

    • New crochet pattern books
    • Vintage crochet pattern books - (pictured at left) These can take more time to locate, but they are worth it if your gift recipient collects, or is interested in vintage patterns.
    • Crochet pattern leaflets
    • Subscription to a crochet magazine (Take a look on...MORE Amazon.)

Yarn was the second most popular answer on the poll. Yarn suggestions:

    • Luxury and novelty yarns - cashmere, alpaca, silk blends - would be appreciated by most crocheters. Many will not splurge on this type of yarn for themselves but enjoy crocheting with it.
    • Avoid wool unless you know (s)he isn't allergic to it.
    • If (s)he frequently makes items for the kitchen, a quality cotton yarn is sure to be appreciated. See also: kitchen cotton.
    • Acrylic is one of the most popular fibers for crochet, but...MORE it isn't necessarily the nicest fiber. If you're shopping for a "yarn snob," acrylic isn't the best choice.
    • If (s)he crochets for charity, acrylic yarn is a safe choice.

Most crocheters already have at least a few hooks in their stash. What many don't have: really nice hooks.

If you'd like to buy crochet hooks for someone on your list, my advice would be to skip buying the cheapies and go for high-quality hooks. According to the poll, "better-than-basic" hooks were a much more popular choice than basic hooks were.

    Suggestions:

    • Ergonomic crochet hooks: These are designed to be comfortable. They tend to be more expensive than basic hooks, but many...MORE crochet enthusiasts have commented that they are worth the expense.
    • Handmade crochet hooks also make nice gifts. See some currently-available choices at etsy.com.

    Crochet Kits

A "crochet kit" is a grouping of crochet-related items that are packaged and/or sold together. You can also create your own crochet kit using items the recipient could use together.

A crochet kit can help to make it easier for the recipient to get started with either the craft in general or with a specific project.

Contents of "crochet kits" can vary widely. Some crochet kits, intended for beginners, are packages of crochet hooks. Some include instructions, and some don't.

Other...MORE crochet kits include a pattern plus all the yarn you'd need to complete a project. This type of kit is an outstanding gift. It combines the two most-requested items crocheters want and allows the recipient to get started on the project immediately. Pictured is a Frozen kit from Amazon that contains everything to make two of the characters along with instructions to make more.

    Crochet Thread

Crochet thread is a fabulous gift idea, but only if you know the recipient likes working with it and will be able to use it. Crochet thread tends to be more challenging to work with than yarn is.

If you know the intended recipient likes crocheting any of the following:

    • Doilies
    • Bookmarks
    • Intricate, lacy tablecloths
    • Lightweight cotton bedspreads
    • Filet crochet projects

then crochet thread is likely to be a welcome gift. If you haven't ever seen the intended recipient crocheting these types of items,...MORE it is probably safer to choose a different gift.
