Something New: The Glow Collection by Carbon 6
Aside from the Blade Runner meets Star Wars meets Star Trek meets Marvel Comics superhero cool factor, there are more than a few reasons why a glow in the dark wedding band is a totally legit option. In fact, for grooms who are looking for a non-traditional wedding ring—something more aggressively alternative than even the mainstream “alternative” metals of tungsten, cobalt and titanium—the Glow Collection by Carbon 6 presents a novel choice, yes, but also one that exceeds the boundaries of... comfort, safety, style and resistance.
Designer John Easley started his company, Carbon 6, to fill a void in the marketplace for tech-forward, high performance wedding bands made of strong, durable and cutting edge materials. Armed with a background in mechanical engineering, and a metallurgical scientist’s innate curiosity about how various materials perform under different conditions, Easley spent a year or so tinkering and experimenting with different possibilities until he landed on the answer: carbon fiber.
Intrigued by the fact that the Italian automotive company Lamborghinihad used carbon fiber to create lightweight, high-performance components for its luxury sports cars, Easley used the research available to develop his own proprietary variant. He also sought to put a unique aesthetic spin on the material. Forged carbon fiber, which is created by combining carbon fiber with resin, tends to display a woven pattern, but Easley felt the look was too industrial for such a sentimental, emotional object. So he instead opted to work the carbon fiber into a more nuanced and elegant marbled design that can take on an array of beautiful lusters, finishes and textures.
Stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and comfortable to wear, Carbon 6 wedding bands also offer a built-in symbolism that Easley and his wife and business partner, Claire, continue to find especially compelling: The blending of two materials (carbon fiber and resin) to create an entity stronger than either substance on its own is indeed a fitting, and captivating, way to signify the joining of two individuals in a lasting, lifelong marriage.
Though Carbon 6 launched less than a year ago, the company is constantly seeking ways to innovate. The Glow Collection of forged carbon fiber bands detailed with luminescent interiors—luminescent in that they literally glow in the dark—is the latest offering to catch on among the company’s devoted fan base of geek chic gamers and redditors.
The glow effect is brought about by the inclusion of a natural crystal powder called strontium aluminate, expertly worked into each band’s design as a decorative element that both approximates fluorescent enamel inlay and the incandescence of an unsheathed lightsaber. Strontium aluminate is a non-toxic substance often used in luxury Swiss watches that’s about 10 times brighter and glows about 10 times longer than copper activated zinc sulfide (another popular glow-in-the-dark powder).
“I’ve always loved experimenting with new designs and materials,” says John. “The Glow Collection was a natural extension of that love of experimentation. I love creating unique, new looks, as well as the challenge of figuring out a way to do them successfully.”
Because we’re finding the novelty factor a bit hard to resist, we’re showing you the Glow collection in a million different lights. Just know that the rings shown in this slideshow don’t magically display the glow effect immediately. How it works: You need to “charge” the ring first. No, it’s not like plugging in your phone when the battery gets low—it’s actually a refreshingly lo-fi phenomenon: All you have to do is shine a strong UV flashlight on it for 10 to 15 seconds. Believe it or not, the next best option is sunlight, though the process will take a little longer.
When fully charged up, the bands glow brightly for several minutes followed by an afterglow that lasts one to two hours. And that’s where the undeniably practical aspect of the these glow-in-the-dark rings comes in—if your groom-to-be happens to lose his band in the grass, on a dark wood floor or the wilds of a thick shag carpet, the ring’s luminescent properties will make it that much easier to locate.
Strontium aluminate naturally produces green and aqua hues. So you’ll find that the Carbon Lume green rings glow the brightest. The glow emitted by the turquoise variant lasts the longest, and the Carbon Lume ring in blue (we call it Starfleet Blue) has a glow factor that is remarkably intense and long-lasting but not to the degree that it “outshines” green or turquoise. There are great-looking purple and orange Lume rings offered in Glow Collection as well, but because these colors stray from strontium aluminate’s intrinsic green and aqua light refraction, the luminescent effect is less pronounced.
Designed and crafted in the company's small Brooklyn, New York studio, each Carbon 6 ring is hand-finished to deliver a smooth, streamlined and comfortable fit. Which may be why the Glow Collection appeals to grooms who simply want a wedding band that’s super comfortable (read: not too heavy, not too thick) and tastefully designed. The cutting edge technology and flash aspect are merely bonus features.
“Glow has even been attracting lot of ‘non-gamer’ grooms that are just looking for something that will work well at the office since the rings don't glow unless they're charged," says John. "They can tell their friends about the forged carbon fiber—that it was first developed by Lamborghini—and show off the glow if they're out for the evening.”
Two looks in one and a Halloween party trick that will put that “bubbling cauldron” of dry ice-infused punch to shame? Who’s ready to give Glow a go?
