Whenever you hear the name Grasshopper in the drink world, you're sure to find a delicious combination of mint and chocolate. This Grasshopper shot recipe follows suit and it is an irresistible little drink that is perfect for any party.

Similar to the popular Grasshopper cocktail, the shooter uses the same three ingredients. The green crème de menthe gives it the signature color along with a tasty mint flavor. The crème de cacao adds a hint of sweet chocolate, and the cream finishes it off, making it a smooth drink that's very easy to shoot. 

The Grasshopper is one of the best-tasting shots you can mix up. In fact, it may be a little too good because the sweet taste does make it easy to have one too many if you're not careful. Yet, it is a fantastic addition to any party, especially those with a green theme like ​St. Patrick's Day.

Get the Greenest Grasshopper

The key to getting a great green drink in any Grasshopper recipe is to choose the right liqueurs. Crème de menthe comes in green and white and crème de cacao has dark and white options. Keep in mind that the "white" liqueurs are actually clear and none of these liqueurs are creamy (crème means it has a lot of sugar).

With that bit of knowledge, you can probably figure out that the best looking Grasshopper comes from green crème de menthe and white crème de cacao. If you were to choose the darker option for the chocolate liqueur, your shot will not have a brilliant green color. It would, instead, be a bit of a muddy mess: more like a swamp rather than a field of clover.

Of course, a combination of any of these liqueurs will produce the same mint-chocolate taste. Yet, if you're going for aesthetics, be sure to choose your liqueurs wisely.

If, by chance, you have no cacao in the bar but you do have a chocolate vodka, go ahead and use that. Again, some are brown and will mess with the color, but the flavor will be the same. This substitute will create a stronger shot as well, so take it a little easier than normal.

A Note About the Cream

Let's be honest, this drink is a shooter and it will be gone in a matter of seconds. That means you really don't have to be too picky about any of the ingredients (unless the color's a concern, of course). Since the liqueurs are inexpensive, there's really no need to go all out on the cream or make a special trip to the store.

If you don't have light cream in stock, don't worry too much. Simply use whatever creamy ingredient you have on hand. This could be half and half, a heavier cream, or even milk.

No dairy products in the bar? No problem. Simply turn to your favorite cream liqueur—Irish cream and RumChata are great options—and pour that instead.
