At Surfaces 2015, carpet manufacturer Milliken debuted its newest additions to the Constantine carpet collection: Hardanger and Crystal Stitch. Both lines are designed for the home, bringing the Constantine collection away from the commercial market and back to its residential roots. Both styles will work well with various types of décor, and are representative of the current 2015 – 2016 design trends.
The designer of both lines, Ginny Jones, was present at Surfaces to introduce the styles.
Hardanger is a Nordic form of embroidery that is traditionally stitched with layered threads into very geometric patterns. Milliken has, it says, created a patterning technique that mimics this stitched aesthetic. The idea behind the collection, according to Milliken, is creating a cozy, warm impression by bringing the feel of a favorite winter sweater to the carpet.
The collection includes seven pattern offerings; two of which are “near solids” designed to coordinate with the more dramatic patterns.
Crystal Stitch Collection
While the Hardanger patterns are beautiful, having seen both carpets first-hand, it was the Crystal Stitch collection that really caught my eye. Jones shares that this collection was inspired by the earth’s ability to create crystals. Referring to the collection as “jewelry for the home” Jones explains that the carpet is made using a Multiple Yarn Infusion technology – multiple yarns are inserted into the needle at a time, enabling a mix of lustres and textures.
The result is a carpet that subtly but beautifully reflects light, and that has the appearance of a metallic thread running through it.
In its January 21, 2015 press release regarding the new collections, Milliken quotes its director of residential initiatives Scott Reams as saying, “Our Multiple Yarn Infusion technology creates luxurious floor covering constructions with depth and rich textural complexities, the perfect companion for discerning style and design.”
Crystal Stitch is offered in six different textures, each with a selection of colors.
Hardanger and Crystal Stitch are both made in the USA from Stainmaster nylon fiber, and both are available in 13’6” widths, thus helping to reduce the number of seams required in a space. Both collections feature 25-year texture retention and abrasive wear warranties. The carpets feature Milliken’s MilliGuard stain protection treatment, and carry lifetime warranties against stains (including food, beverage, and pet urine) and soiling.
Both collections feature Milliken’s AlphaSan antimicrobial additive, designed to protect the carpet fibers against bacteria and other microbes that can cause odors. For more information on AlphaSan, visit the Milliken Chemical website.
The Hardanger and Crystal Stitch collections portray an air of informal elegance that would work in both formal and casual décors. The collections are unique, and can virtually guarantee a distinct look – you won’t have to worry about ending up with a carpet that looks the same as your neighbors’. The patterns, especially in the Hardanger line, lend well to using the broadloom to make a custom area rug.
You can expect to pay a bit more for these collections than you would for more traditional styling; however, the collections carry excellent warranties – among the longest in the industry – so the cost can be viewed as a long-term investment in your home.
