There is a lot of experience here, particularly in the professional cooking equipment area. Expert Review - Hestan 54-Inch Deluxe Gas Grill
New to the outdoor cooking arena, Hestan is a division of the Meyer Corporation, which is the second largest manufacturer of cooking equipment in the world.
Their products lines and there are many, sold under a wide range of brand names are well-respected and globally distributed. It is only logical that they produce a high-end line of outdoor gas grills. The Hestan Gas Grills are very high-end. This model starts around $8,000 and can quickly rise a few thousand more depending on the configuration.
The burners used by Hestan are a custom design. Though tubular stainless steel, they have a branching tree design that spreads the heat of the 25,000 BTUs evenly under the cooking surface. It is like a sea of fire that is both intense and amazingly well distributed. Above these burners (they call them trellis burners) are heavy flame tamers that are small ceramic bricks locked into stainless steel frames. These can be reversed so that one side can clean while the other side faces up. While a nice feature, like many similarly designed grills, grease can actually pool on the flame tamers and cause flare-ups. While not a serious problem, it can require a close eye when grilling fatty foods.
The infrared rotisserie burner on this grill is top mounted, meaning the heat focuses down on food and not across like with most similarly featured gas grills.
This burner can be used for rotisserie cooking, but also as a top down infrared salamander burner, perfect for searing the tops of foods, so it can be a steak broiler or used to really crust up the surface of a pizza. The dual side burner, which comes standard on the freestanding model is of professional caliber and a great addition, though I prefer that they come covered so keep the outdoors from accumulating around the burners.
This gas grill is part of a large line of outdoor kitchen products including a wide range of burner configurations, refrigeration, storage and everything else necessary for the full experience. The main burners in this grill can be swapped out with infrared burners for greater heat, to create a searing zone, or to simply add greater versatility to the cooking experience.
All in all, this is a fantastic gas grill with excellent construction and a great deal of attention to detail. Just one example is what they refer to as stadium lighting. Generally, internal gas grill lights are built directly into the back of the grill body. To make room for the top down infrared burner, the lights on this model are in the front of the hood. They come on when the lid is lifted (they are motion activated) and shine directly down onto the food without getting in the way or causing a lot of glare. It is one of many very nice touches that comes standard on this model.
If you are in the market for one of the more expensive gas grills, the Hestan 54-Inch Gas Grill certainly warrants consideration. There are excellent grills in this price range, and this is one of them.
