Though the South is not best known for its appetizers and finger foods, there are a few noteworthy exceptions along with several more recent favorites. Benedictine Spread was created by Jennie Benedict, a caterer and restaurant hostess in Louisville, Kentucky, between 1893 and 1925. The cucumber-cream cheese spread is often tinted with green food coloring and served as a dip or on bread rounds.

Cheese Straws and toasted, roasted, sugared and/or peppered pecans have long been favorites throughout the Southern states.
