Homemade Valentine Cards - a Butterfly Valentine to Make with Kids
Here is an adorable and super-easy butterfly Valentine card you can make with your child. If you're making cards for the entire class, this simple homemade Valentine is an excellent kids' craft—all you need to do is cut out multiple copies of each of the butterfly pieces and assemble them at the end. First, gather your materials for your butterfly Valentine card.
To get started, gather your materials. You will need the following:

- cardstock paper in pink, purple, and red
- hole puncher
- brad fastener
- fine-tipped marker

Next, fold the red card stock paper.To begin making your butterfly Valentine, make a 2-inch fold in your red card stock paper.Continue to 4 of 14 below.

Draw the body of the butterfly.Turn your paper so that the folded portion is vertical. Take your ruler and make a small mark at about 6 inches. This will be the height of your butterfly's body. Next, take a pen or pencil and draw a half circle, about 1/2-inch wide. This will be the head. Then draw a long, oval shape for the body, which should be narrow (about 1-inch maximum at its widest point). Add a small circle on top of the head for the antenna.Continue to 5 of 14 below.

Cut out the butterfly body.Take your scissors and cut out the butterfly body. It should look something like this.Continue to 6 of 14 below.

Draw the butterfly's face.Next, take your fine-tipped marker and draw a face on the butterfly. You can also add antennae on top of the head.Continue to 7 of 14 below.

Next, fold the pink card stock paper.The next step is to make the wings. Take your pink card stock paper and make a fold about 3 inches wide.Continue to 8 of 14 below.

Draw the butterfly wing.
Turn the pink card stock so that the fold is vertical. Take a pen or pencil and draw the butterfly wing on the folded portion of the pink card stock.
Tip: When making your wing, draw the bottom portion slightly wider and longer than the top portion of the wing. Make the wing about 3 inches wide at its widest point and about 5 inches from top to bottom (slightly shorter than the body).Continue to 9 of 14 below.

Cut out the wings.Take your scissors and cut the wings for the butterfly. Once you've cut out the wings from the card stock, cut them in half so that you have two separate wings.Continue to 10 of 14 below.

Punch holes in the butterfly body and wings.
Using your hole puncher, make a hole in the body (just below the neckline) and wings (in the upper inner corners) of your butterfly.
Tip: You may want to line up the wings to the body to make sure that you want the holes in those spots before you make the hole. If you would like, you can make a small mark where the holes will go with a pencil.Continue to 11 of 14 below.

Fasten together the butterfly body and wings.Take your brad fastener and put the butterfly body and wings together. Be sure not to make it too tight so that you can swivel the wings to open and close them.Continue to 12 of 14 below.

Cut out hearts using the purple card stock paper.Take your purple card stock paper and make a fold about 2 inches wide. Draw hearts of various sizes and cut them out.Continue to 13 of 14 below.

Glue the hearts onto the butterfly's wings.Children will especially love this next part. Even young kids can help decide where to glue on the hearts onto the wings to give the butterfly cards an little extra cuteness. Your child will be proud of his work!Continue to 14 of 14 below.

Write your Valentine message.
Have your child write his Valentine message on the body of the butterfly using a black fine-tipped marker. If hasn't quite mastered writing yet, you can write the message and just have him sign his name.
