This is a fantastic recipe for steak sauce. The best part about making your own steak sauces is that you can adjust the ingredients for your own liking. Bare in mind that this recipe makes quite a bit, so halve or even quarter the recipe is needed. Serve sauce on the side warm or at room temperature.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup/240 mL ketchup
  • 1/2 cup/120 mL onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 large clove garlic, smashed
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL water
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons/30 mL soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons/30 mL
  • brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoons/15 mL
  • prepared mustard
  • pinch of salt and black pepper
  • olive oil

How to Make It

1.  Heat 2 tablespoons/30 mL olive oil to pan. Add onions and cook for 3-4 minutes over medium heat. Do not brown onions, simply sweat them.  They should be translucent in appearance.  Next, add smash garlic and saute for 15 seconds. Place remaining ingredients in saucepan and simmer on low, uncovered for 20-25 minutes, or until it reaches a thickened consistency. Stir occasionally .

2. Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool completely.

Strain to remove onion and garlic. Use immediately.  If making ahead of time, simply store in a jar or plastic airtight container for up to 1 week after initial preparation.

3. To use, simply serve on the side with any type of beef steak.
