Whether you have a friend who has just moved into her very first house or you have a new neighbor, it’s always nice to write something thoughtful in a card to offer your best wishes. It doesn’t have to be long. A short and meaningful note lets her know you’re happy for her.
How to Write a Housewarming Message
Although the message doesn’t have to be long, there are certain things you need to include in a housewarming note. First, you’ll need to address the person. Next, you need to acknowledge the fact that the person has a new place. Then you should offer some sort of best wishes for this transition. If this card is going with a gift, mention what you’re giving the person. Finally, offer a warm, friendly closing.
Housewarming Message Ideas for a Close Friend
When a close friend has just moved into a new home, you’ll want to show more warmth than for someone you barely know. Here are some ideas for what to write:
I’m so happy you found the perfect home for you and your family. It seems like a lovely fit for you, with the blend of sleek architecture and wood accents. I hope you, George, and the kids make lots of wonderful memories in this place. I know you’ve always enjoyed sitting under your parents’ oak tree, so I ordered one to be planted in your backyard. All you have to do is point to where you want it, and the people from the nursery will put it there. I hope it brings you many years of joy. I’ll see you soon.
Congratulations on your new apartment. I’m happy you found the perfect place to call home. The pictures you posted on Facebook look amazing. Enjoy the basket of cookies I baked. After you get settled, I’d love to see your place in person. Call me when you’re ready for company.
After rooming with you all four years of college, I can’t imagine either of us living alone. But I’m super happy that you found a great apartment near your new job, and I wish you the very best. Let me know when I can visit.
Miss you already,
Housewarming Card for a Family Member
When you write a housewarming card for someone who’s related to you, the message can be more intimate. However, be cautious about writing something too personal because you don’t want to embarrass the recipient or make her feel awkward if the card is read by others.
Here are some examples:
We’re excited that you found a wonderful apartment so quickly. Over the years, we’ve watched you grow into such a delightful woman, and we’re proud of you for all of your accomplishments. Since this is your first place, we thought you’d enjoy this basket of kitchen gadgets. We look forward to seeing your new place after you finish settling in.
Aunt Tessa and Uncle Adam
Dear Grammy and Gramps,
Congratulations on selling your house. We’re excited that you found such a wonderful place to move to and enjoy your retirement. The family got together to get this gift card so you can purchase something wonderful for your new home. Knowing the two of you, we’re sure your social schedule will fill up quickly. But when you have some time, give us a call and let us know when we can stop by to see your new home.

What to Write to a New Neighbor
When someone new moves into the neighborhood, it’s nice to greet the person or family with a card and a small gift. Many people like to bake cookies as a housewarming gift. However, if that’s not possible, a kind and welcoming note will let them know they have nice neighbors.
If you don’t have the time to bring a treat, it’s nice to also give them a list of local restaurants, hair salons, dry cleaners, pharmacies, and other points of interest. Include the addresses and phone numbers so they’ll have everything they need. Tuck that inside the housewarming card and hand-deliver it to them as soon as possible after they move in. You can also include a list of all the neighbors’ names and addresses if everyone else is okay with that.
Here are a couple of warm messages for new neighbors:
Welcome to Landings Court! It’s nice to have a new family on the street. We hope you enjoy this neighborhood as much as we have. If you have any questions about the area, please don’t hesitate to call at 555-1212.
Your next-door neighbors,
Welcome, Johnson Family,
All of the neighbors on Tyler Street are happy to have you as a neighbor. We hope you enjoy this gift basket filled with a few items for your family. If you have any questions about the area, please feel free to ask any of us. We’re a friendly bunch, and we look forward to getting to know you at our next block party.
Neighbors and friends,
George and Andrea Freeman
Dear Smith Family,
Welcome to your new home. It’s exciting to have a new family on the block. Our neighborhood has a policy of greeting new folks with a backyard party. I’ll let you know when that is. In the meantime, enjoy this plate of brownies.
Your new neighbors,
The Potter Family
Humorous Messages for a Housewarming Card
Most people enjoy humor on some level, so it’s fine to include something funny in your housewarming card. However, be aware of how far you can go, and don’t cross the line.
Here are some examples of humorous housewarming messages:
Dear Hank and Anna,
Congratulations on joining the drowning-in-the-mortgage club. We always welcome newcomers so we have someone to commiserate with. Seriously, though, we’re happy that you found your forever home. From what we’ve seen of your house online, it looks spectacular.
Chuck and Jenny
We’re happy you’ve found your own place. By the way, do you realize this makes you an official adult? That might be a hard pill to swallow, but here’s a basket of wine and cheese to help wash it down.
More Thoughts on Housewarming Cards
You may purchase a housewarming card or use a blank card for your message. Remember that the most important thing is to congratulate the person or family. Use any of the messages here as a template, but add a little bit to make it even more personal.
