How to Extend the Life of Your Wardrobe

It’s no secret that we are dealing with a climate crisis. What isn’t as widely understood is that the apparel industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions. So for anyone looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, a great place to start is by extending the life of your wardrobe.

Not sure how to do it? Take a look at how we gave new life to this much loved and frequently worn sundress. After being worn all the time in previous summers, it was starting to look a little dingy and had a few stains from self-tanner and bronzer. Instead of throwing it out or donating it, we thought we’d try to bring it back to life for another summer season.

This well-loved dress was starting to look dingy.

We’ll walk you through the steps you need to take if you want to follow our lead and save some of your own favorite items. Here’s how to use OxiClean™ to remove stains and give new life to old clothes.

Step 1: Gather supplies

For this simple tutorial, you’ll need a few supplies and a working area. Here’s what you’ll need:

OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover is gentle on clothes but tough on stains, which makes it the perfect product for this light colored and floral-patterned sundress. Chlorine-free and color-safe, you can be confident that it won’t cause bright patterns like this to fade.

Step 2: Pre-Soak

Once you’ve gathered all of your supplies, you’ll want to make the pre-soak mixture. Fill the OxiClean™ scoop to line 2 to 4 for every gallon of water you’ll use. For this mixture, we filled the scoop to line 2 and used a gallon of water which was the perfect amount. You can just use warm water right from the tap, there’s no need to heat up or boil water for the pre-soak. Stir to combine the mixture.

Then add your article of clothing to the pre-soak mixture and allow it to sit for 1 to 6 hours. The time you allow your clothing to sit should be determined by the severity of the stains. The more severe the stains, the longer you should let it soak.

While OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover works its magic, you’ll be free to take a trip to the beach, have a casual picnic or fire up the barbecue. It’s one task that can help you focus on the activities that actually make summer fun.

Sundress Soak

Step 3: Wash normally

After the pre-soak step is complete it’s time to wash the sundress. Just fill the OxiClean™ scoop to line 1 then add that directly to the washing machine drum. Remove your clothes from the pre-soak mixture and add it directly to the washing machine, along with your usual laundry detergent.

Step 4: After washing

Once we dried the sundress per the labeled instructions, we were happy to find that the self-tanner and bronzer stains were gone and it looked as good as new!

Before and After

While we’re excited that the sundress is ready to wear for another season, you might be tired of some of your old summer clothes. But don’t toss those pieces quite yet. Instead, consider refreshing it up with OxiClean™ and donating it to a local thrift shop. That way someone else can come along and give the piece new life.
