Create Your Own Pet Rock
A pet rock is an inventive alternative for anyone who wants a pet but does not have the time or space to take care of one. It is also a perfect pet for bad economic times because you do not have to spend money on food, vet visits and toys! With a rock and some basic craft supplies, you can create your own pet with lots of character! This project takes a minimum of ten minutes and can be done with kids ages three and up.

Gathering The Supplies
Gather together all the supplies so you have them on hand. For this project, you will definitely need a rock! It can be any size or shape you like.
To decorate your rock, you can use a variety of supplies. Here are some suggestions:
- Craft foam
- Dimensional paint
- Chenille stems
- Wiggle eyes
Grab any tools you need including:
- Craft glue
- Paint brush
Use this list as inspiration but also use your own imagination. Dig through your craft supplies and use... whatever inspires you. Now, let's start making our pet rock...

Preparing Your Rock
Go for a walk and find a rock. All of the rocks shown here are between one and two inches in diameter. This size usually fits perfectly in the palm of your hand if you like to hold your pet, but you can use a smaller or larger rock if you prefer.
Wash it using soap and water and let the rock dry completely.
Now, we can start adding the face...

Adding Eyes to Your Pet Rock
A favorite choice for eyes are wiggle eyes because they add a little more dimension and movement, but you can also use paint, beads or even buttons.

Adding a Nose to Your Pet Rock
Of course, your pet rock does not have to have a nose (like some shown in the photo), but if you want, consider using a piece of chenille stem, a small pom-pom, a button or a bead. You can also paint on a nose.

Adding a Mouth to Your Pet Rock
Like the other facial features, you can use a variety of products to make your pet rock's mouth. In the photo here, you can see mouths made using acrylic paint, dimensional paint and even embroidery floss.

Finishing Touches For Your Pet Rock
To finish your pet rock, consider adding some personal touches. You can add hair, ears and other embellishments. As you can see in the photo, you can use craft foam, feathers, yarn, chenille stems, embroidery floss, paint and even scrapbook fibers to make hair for my rocks.
