Some chores can feel overwhelming, but cleaning your clothes, linens and other items doesn’t have to be stressful. By sticking to a schedule and following a few simple rules, laundry day can be a breeze. After all, staying on top of your chores doesn’t mean working harder—it means working smarter. With industry-leading Whirlpool® appliances and a few must-know tips by your side, you can check off most of your “to do” list in no time.

Read on for six tips for an easier laundry day.

Tip 1. Pretreat Difficult Stains

Sticky situations call for a little prepwork. Keep your clothes looking their very best by ensuring you tackle stains before they go into the wash. A store-bought solution is a great workhorse to have on hand for most stains, but there are a few DIY solutions you can try too. For a wine stain, try a blend of salt and baking soda and let it sit for at least ten minutes before washing. Hydrogen peroxide is a great resource for blood or other protein-based stains.

Features such as Whirlpool brand’s Pretreat Station Plus makes stain removal convenient with quick and easy access to a built-in faucet and pretreat brush to help you get it all done at once. For more stain removal tips, check out Whirlpool brand's Appliance IQ blog.

Tip 2. Select the Correct Water Temperature

Picking the right water temperature can be key to a great wash and longer-lasting clothes. Concerned about shrinkage or bleeding colors? Always use a cold wash to preserve your clothes and help them stay as new-looking as possible. Man-made fibers and denim, meanwhile, work best in warm water. Your hottest setting should be reserved for those heavily soiled items or an all-white wash.

Tip 3. Buy the Right Machine for Your Needs

Before you purchase a new washer or dryer, consider how often you do laundry and how large your loads are. Always get a machine that is large enough to handle your whole family’s needs. If you’re going with a top load washer, you may be overwhelmed choosing between a machine with an agitator or an impeller. To get the best of both worlds, consider the Whirlpool® Top Load Washer with 2 in 1 Removable Agitator, the industry’s first washing machine with a removable center agitator post, allowing you to customize every load to meet your needs.

Tip 4. Pick the Right Detergent

Detergent can be a personal choice, but knowing the right detergent for your clothes can help keep them looking their best wash after wash. An all-purpose product such as Swash® Liquid Laundry Detergent is a great option if you want a safe detergent for every item of clothing. Parents with babies may opt for a newborn detergent with gentle ingredients, while very soiled items may require a heavier duty detergent.

The Whirlpool® Load & Go™ Dispenser makes dosing detergent a breeze, as it allows you to skip the step of adding detergent to the washer for up to 20 loads of laundry, saving you time with every wash.

Tip 5. Remove Lingering Smells

Nothing is worse than taking your clean clothes out of the dryer just to face lingering smells or mold. Bacteria is the number-one cause of smelly clothes, so the first step is to ensure a thorough clean with every wash. You can remove smells by adding a cup of white vinegar to your wash and soaking your gym clothes or other smelly items before putting them into the washing machine. Consider using a sanitization cycle such as the one offered by Whirlpool brand on select washers. When combined with a scoop of Oxi, Whirlpool brand’s Sanitize Cycle can help remove up to 99% of household bacteria in every load.

Tip 6. Stick to a Schedule

The easiest way to stay on top of laundry is to stick to a weekly schedule. Whether it’s once a week or more in a busy family, creating a designated “laundry day” means dirty clothes won’t pile up and leave you with an overwhelming task. Whirlpool brand offers a mobile app that can help you stick to a schedule and stay on top of your laundry, even while you’re running around doing other chores in the house. Alerts to let you know when your load is finished mean you won’t be tied to the machine waiting for each cycle to complete.

You can even assign laundry day tasks to your family to make sure everyone pitches in on chores—and with suggested cycles for every type of clothing, you can be sure you’ll get the ideal clean for your favorite blouse every time.

Tip 7. Reduce Wrinkles

Ironing can add a lot of time to your laundry routine. Instead, there are ways you can keep your clothes as wrinkle-free as possible. Consider using a fabric softener in your wash to help reduce wrinkles. When drying your clothes, stick to the lowest setting on your dryer and remove the items as soon as the load is finished (an alert on the Whirlpool® App can remind you when it’s time to remove them). Other dryer settings such as the Whirlpool® Wrinkle Shield™ Plus Option with Steam can help keep wrinkles from forming without an iron.

Tackling laundry day doesn’t have to be an arduous chore. With Whirlpool® laundry machines by your side, you can keep your clothes looking fresh and save time every time you throw a load of laundry in the wash.
