JCPenney, the beloved department store chain, is exploring their philanthropic side with a new in-house brand, Hope & Wonder.

And the brand's first collection celebrates Black History Month, with 100% of the net profits to go to Black Girls Smile, a nonprofit that seeks to provide young Black women with mental health resources and education.

According to a press release for the announcement, the collection was "created and curated in-house for the first time by JCPenney’s Creative Coalition, an internal team of BIPOC designers."

“We are honored to introduce JCPenney’s 2022 Black History Month collection authentically created in house by our very own BIPOC design team — a first of its kind for the Company,” said Val Harris, senior vice president, design, brand management, and trend, JCPenney, in a press release. “I am proud to lead a talented group of empowered designers who are passionate about making a difference in people’s lives.”

Home and Apparel Collections

The first Hope & Wonder collection features a range of home decor, clothing, and accessories, from sweatshirts in inclusive sizes, t-shirts for the whole family, hats, and baby onesies, as well as mugs, notebooks, planners, and wall art.

And the home decor collection works well with a range of styles. Minimalists will be drawn to the line drawing-style prints and inspirational phrases with white backgrounds. But there's plenty of color as well, like the pink prints that would be the perfect addition to a gallery wall, or the brightly colored mugs that will dress up any desk.

And while JCPenney's in-house team lead the charge in the design of the collection, the collection also includes a winning submission from JCPenney’s Young, Gifted, and Black Design Challenge, Kah'Milah Ledgester, whose 'Just Breathe' design will be featured on a t-shirt. The design challenge is an annual competition that "empowers the next generation of leaders at Historically Black Colleges and Universities," according to the press release.

"Inspired by the national Black History Month 2022 theme of Black Health and Wellness, the JCPenney Creative Coalition produced fashion and home accessories to complement three design themes — Mind, Body, Soul; Black History Pride; and Brilliantly Black & Black Girl Magic."

Celebrating Cultural Moments

While the first collection is dedicated to Black History Month, the goal of the new Hope & Wonder line as a whole is to celebrate holidays and honor cultural moments while supporting non-profit organizations that are directly supporting these communities.

The press release also noted future holidays and cultural observances that the collection aims to celebrate, including PRIDE, Juneteenth, and Hispanic Heritage Month. "During these events, JCPenney will donate 100% of net profits from these collections to nonprofit partners that amplify our Philanthropic mission to help close the opportunity gap for under-resourced youth and Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) commitment to build a culture of belonging," the press release said.

The limited edition Black History Month collection is now available to shop in stores and at JCPenney.com.
