Kansas City barbecue sauce is probably America's most popular barbecue sauce recipe. Rich, dark, thick, sweet, and tangy, this barbecue sauce recipe is great on everything from smoked beef brisket, to the classic rack of pork ribs.

What You'll Need

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2/3 cup dark molasses
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mace
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional

How to Make It

  1. Whisk together all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer, stirring, on low heat for 15 minutes. Let cool to room temperature. May be used as a basting sauce towards the end of cooking, or brushed on after barbecuing, with additional sauce served on the side.
