Sneak Peek: Karl Lagerfeld Engagement Rings
Wearing a wedding gown designed by Karl Lagerfeld is one thing (a girl can dream!). But having him design your engagement ring? That’s just insane. Or rather, a really, really, really compelling thought to entertain and—are you sitting down?—I’m pleased to report that this is now possible (and no, you don’t have to be a celebrity to enjoy the privilege).
Now that this information has come to light, I suspect that you’ll throw whatever you were thinking, ring-wise, out the window. Because if you have even a passing interest in fashion, and are also planning to get engaged this fall or winter, the possibility of having an engagement ring designed by Mr. Lagerfeld kind of changes everything, no?
The Karl Lagerfeld bridal jewelry collection is the result of a new licensing agreement with the Frederick Goldman Luxury Group (which also includes the prestigious bridal jewelry brand, Scott Kay), one of the largest manufacturers of fine jewelry in North America. While Karl Lagerfeld has lent his name to a number of brands over the years (see: H&M and Macy’s), what’s unique about this link-up is that it pertains to a deeply symbolic, luxury product designed to last for eternity. There’s nothing “fast fashion” about it. And while bridal designers like Monique Lhuillier and Vera Wang have turned out engagement ring lines in the past, there’s no question that a Karl Lagerfeld-designed engagement ring carries with it an unprecedented level of cachet.
Imagine looking down at your engagement ring, knowing that it comes from the same mad genius that gave us Julianne Moore’s memorable Karl Lagerfeld-designed Chanel gown from the 2015 Oscars. (The press, you might remember, raved about the couture masterpiece, which featured 80,000 hand-painted sequins, and organza flowers, and took 27 workers 987 hours to create). Or the 2014 haute couture wedding dress by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel that was featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of its Manus x Machina costume exhibit. Who else would think to design a wedding gown out of a scuba knit, with a 20-foot train hand-painted in gold, machine-printed with rhinestones and hand-embroidered with pearls and gemstones?
Brides-to-be who favor a modern, edgy aesthetic will be particularly enchanted with the new Karl Lagerfeld engagement rings, which will abandon all things blingy, vintage-inspired or overly frilly and romantic. Instead, the new engagement ring designs incorporate a pointed stud motif (an iconic symbol used in many Karl Lagerfeld accessories, from fashion watches to costume jewelry). Geometric patterns and sleek, knife-edged silhouettes are also showcased, and many of the engagement rings clearly take inspiration from Parisian architecture (think: Gothic archways and streamlined, stylized references to Notre Dame’s famous Rose Window and the Dôme des Invalides). Prices range from $1,000 to $10,0000.
Take a look at the rings from all angles in the following slideshow. It’s a chance to really take in the design details that make these engagement rings uniquely Karl Lagerfeld.
