Experience

Kate has been obsessed with home decor for as long as she can remember. From watching home renovation shows to redecorating her room as often as she was allowed, she learned early just how much switching a duvet cover or adding a new accessory could transform a room. At one point she aspired to become an interior designer, though her love of writing won out in the end.

Kate joined the team at Dotdash in July 2019, to follow her dream of working in lifestyle publishing. She worked as a freelance contributing writer for POPSUGAR for three years, and her writing has also appeared on The Spruce, MyDomaine, and Stacker. An experienced writer and editor, Kate began her career in digital content marketing at Intrigue Media, helping local businesses with content marketing strategies, social media and email marketing, and copywriting for web. Her love of all things home and lifestyle made her an expert content marketer for homeowner-focused businesses.

Education

Kate has a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Guelph and a Master of Arts in Journalism with a print specialization from the University of Western Ontario.

5 Questions With Kate

Describe your home style in a few words or phrases.

Colorful mid-century modern; I love to mix classic mid-century furniture with bright textiles and accents.

Which room in your home do you find most relaxing?

Definitely my living room. It's my favorite room in my apartment, and the one I've spent the most time decorating and making just right. It's also where most of my plant collection is—being surrounded by greenery helps me de-stress and feel cozy.

What's your most dreaded chore?

Deep cleaning the kitchen. Nothing fills me with more fear than pulling the large appliances away from the wall to clean behind them; I'm always bracing myself for a colony of pests, although it hasn't happened yet (knock on wood).

What's your favorite season and why?

Fall. If it could be fall year-round I would be so happy. NYC summers are too long and hot, and every year I am just counting down the days until the temperature is crisp and the leaves start to change colors, and my hair no longer has to suffer through the humidity.

What home decor trend are you loving right now?

I'm really into the move toward earthy tones and natural textures in the bedroom. White bed linens have never worked for me (how does anyone keep them so clean and white?), so I'm ready to hop on the terracotta linens and rattan furniture train.
