Color of the Year announcements come in many shapes and sizes. There are the paint color predictions, such as Behr’s 2022 Color of the Year, from paint companies seeking to encourage people to give their walls, cabinets, doors, and trim a signature shade. There’s Pantone’s Color of the Year, which is more about overall applications of color in design. And then there’s KitchenAid’s Color of the Year, which is less about a color in the abstract and more about a specific line of small appliances featuring said Color of the Year.
KitchenAid’s annual announcement of a color pick is paired with the release of stand mixers, blenders, and more small appliances available in that color, giving bakers, color fans, and kitchen-updaters all a practical way of using the year’s color in their home in just one step.
With the announcement of Beetroot—a rich magenta shade—as its 2022 Color of the Year, KitchenAid is giving people the option to add a vibrant, unexpected pop of color to their cookspace in a very manageable way. While some Color of the Year announcements can be difficult to apply, KitchenAid makes it easy, something fans of both efficiency and color can appreciate.
And what a color to apply: Practically jewel-toned, just a little metallic, and gloriously purple, Beetroot is the perfect pop of color to dress up any kitchen counter or pantry shelf. The root vegetable–inspired hue is toned down just enough to not be too purple, with dark undertones that help the color feel sophisticated but still inspired by nature.
“Looking at the outside of the beet, you’d never know the brightness concealed within,” said Jessica McConnell, Whirlpool Color, Finish & Material Design, in a press release announcing the color. “When sliced open, it reveals extraordinary vibrance inside. The rich magenta with lush satin finish makes every day more vibrant with a pop of energizing color.”
KitchenAid first introduced stand mixer colors in 1955 and in the decades since has developed new applications of color to kitchen appliances. A colorful stand mixer has practically become a kitchen staple (and the rare appliance that you don’t need to struggle to store) thanks to KitchenAid’s efforts, and now color fans everywhere have a brand new color option to choose from (for now, at least—Color of the Year appliance options aren’t always available for the long-term).
“At KitchenAid, we have always championed the power of color to fuel creativity,” said Carley Smith, senior marketing manager for KitchenAid, in the color announcement press release. “Beetroot is no different. This energizing and uplifting hue invites adventurous cooks of all skill levels to make every day more vibrant by feeding their insatiable appetite for new experiences in the kitchen and beyond.”

Beetroot fans can bring the color home in KitchenAid’s K400 Blender ($300) and Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer ($500) starting February 10. KitchenAid also partnered with Stan’s Donuts to celebrate the launch with a limited-availability beetroot-colored donut, available at Stan’s locations in Chicago and nationally through Goldbelly until February 13.
