    This soft ball is easy for little hands to grip and won't cause any damage when played with indoors. The segments are small and the color changes keep the knitter interested. It's super fast too -- I made the sample in half a day, so it makes a perfect last-minute gift!

    Materials:

    • 1 ball each Schoeller and Stahl Cotton Mix in shades 03 Red, 20 Orange, 19 Sun, 13 Emerald, 16 Azure, 17 Royal, 09 Lily -- or about 15 yards in each color of medium weight yarn of your choice
    • Machine washable...MORE polyester fiberfill for stuffing
    • 1 pair size US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles
    • yarn needle, tape measure, scissors

    Gauge:

    4 stitches and 6 rows per inch in Stockinette Stitch.

    Size:

    Circumference is about 12 inches.

    Knit the Ball

    Make one strip in each color (7 strips).

    1. Cast on 2 stitches.
    2. Purl one row
    3. Kfb in first stitch, Kbf in second stitch (4 stitches).
    4. Purl 1 row.
    5. K1, m1R, k to last stitch, m1L, K1 (6 stitches).
    6. Purl 1 row.
    7. Knit 1 row.
    8. Purl 1 row.
    9. K1, m1R, k to last stitch, m1L, K1 (8 stitches).
    10. Purl 1 row.
    11. Knit 1 row.
    12. Purl 1 row.
    13. K,1 m1R, k to last stitch, m1L, K1(10 stitches).
    14. Work in Stockinette Stitch for 3 inches, ending with a WS row.
    15. Next row: K1, ssk, k to last 3 stitches, k2tog, K1 (8 stitches).
    16. Purl 1 row.
    17. Knit 1 row.
    18. Purl...MORE 1 row.
    19. K1, ssk, k to last 3 stitches, k2tog, K1 (6 stitches).
    20. Purl 1 row.
    21. K1, ssk, k to last 3 stitches, k2tog, K1 (4 stitches).
    22. Purl 1 row.
    23. K1, ssk, k to last 3 stitches, k2tog, K1 (2 stitches).
    24. Purl 1 row.
    25. K2tog, fasten off.

    Sew strips together with mattress stitch in following color sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

    When sewing last seam, stop about 3 inches before the end and stuff ball with washable polyester fiberfill. Sew up rest of seam and weave in ends.
