We purchased the Koldfront 24-Bottle Freestanding Dual Zone Wine Cooler so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.
Any good wine connoisseur knows that the way you store wine can have a big impact on its taste, quality, and longevity. Experts advise against storing wine in places where temperature fluctuates as it can cause the cork to contract, allowing unwanted oxygen into your bottle and ultimately changing its flavor. Wine fridges prevent oxidation by storing wines at fixed optimal temperatures. If your house is always stocked with a couple bottles of wine that won’t be opened anytime soon, a popular dual-zone temperature option like the Koldfront 24-Bottle Freestanding Dual Zone Wine Cooler is a great investment.
Setup Process: Seamless two-step process
The Koldfront 24-Bottle Wine Cooler is exceptionally easy to set up. The only thing we had to do was attach the handle using our own Phillips head screwdriver. The fridge comes with its feet already attached; if your floors aren’t level, you can adjust them to make sure the wine cooler is level. This is an important step in the setup process, and you’ll need to use your own level. If you don’t have one on hand, you can use a smartphone app.
This is a freestanding wine fridge. Koldfront makes note of that multiple times in the instruction manual and in the online item description. That means you need to leave extra space around the appliance to allow for ventilation. According to Koldfront, it needs a minimum of 2 to 3 inches on each side (including the top) and 3 to 4 inches in the back. The instruction manual recommends a 5-inch clearance on the sides and top and a 10-inch clearance in the back. We went with something in the middle and haven’t had any problems.

Koldfront also recommends keeping the wine cooler in an area around 78 degrees for optimal operation. As long as you keep it at a moderate temperature and away from hot spaces, like a grill or oven, it’ll work fine. We set ours up in our dining room. You could also use it in a den or family room, although we recommend putting something under the wine cooler, such as a large and sturdy tile if you’re setting it up on a carpeted floor.
When the wine cooler is operating, the fan makes an audible whirring sound. But standing only a few feet away, it’s quiet enough to fade into the background.
Performance: Makes wine taste better
The ultimate test of a wine cooler’s worth is to see if the temperature stays constant and if it preserves your wine’s quality. We invited some friends over to compare wine that had been chilled in the Koldfront with similar bottles that had spent the day on the counter. We tried a red and a white—Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, to be exact. Our friends universally agreed that the chilled wine tasted better.
The white wine, in particular, benefitted from being kept at the lower temperature. We usually store our white wine in the refrigerator, but most wine experts would say that’s too cold. We liked that this cooler allowed us to set each zone so we could store different types of wine at their ideal temperatures. This feature is great when entertaining, and will prove useful even if you don’t drink multiple varieties of wine.
Features: Ideal for all types of wine
Our favorite thing about the Koldfront is its dual temperature controls. We drink both red and white wine, so having a single place to properly store both varieties is great. The top zone can be set between 54 and 66 degrees, ideal for storing red wine. The bottom zone can be set from 46 to 66 degrees, making it a good place for white or red wine. The fridge uses Thermoelectric cooling to keep the wines chilled, which makes the appliance quiet and energy-efficient. The only downfall here is that those who only drink white wine may be disappointed in the temperature control limitations of the top zone.

Adjusting the temperature and interior light is easy using the touchscreen buttons on the front of the wine fridge. We just had to press the up or down button to the desired temperature and let the wine cooler adjust. Once it reaches your desired temperature, it’ll flash a few times. Then the display will show the current temperature, which you can watch go up or down as it reaches your new set temperature. Koldfront recommends waiting 24 hours from your initial set-up to allow the temperature to adjust. Making minor adjustments after that don’t take very long.
The Koldfront cooler also has a locking mechanism on the bottom of the unit. Initially, we didn’t think this was a very important feature. As our three-year-old quickly demonstrated, though, opening the wine fridge is both easy and convenient at his level. To lock the wine fridge, we just inserted one of the included keys (there are two) into the mechanism and turned.
Design: Modern and sleek
The Koldfront 24-Bottle Wine Cooler is a large appliance, so we wanted to make sure it fit in with our home’s decor. The stainless steel and glass front gives it a modern touch and works especially well if you have other stainless steel appliances. We really like the look and function of the interior LED light. It illuminates just enough to allow anyone a glimpse into what bottles are stored in the wine cooler, and allows you to see what temperature each zone is set to.

The interior wooden shelves are nice looking and hold three bottles of wine each. We needed to open the wine cooler door 180 degrees to pull each shelf out enough to put a bottle of wine on it. The same process is used to install and remove the shelves, if needed. This was easy to do, but did require us to leave additional space to the right on the wine fridge.
The shelves can fit standard 750-milliliter wine bottles. Anything with a greater capacity, either because the bottle is wider or taller, won’t fit in this wine fridge without removing a shelf and reducing the number of bottles you can store. We didn’t find this to be an issue, but it’s something to keep in mind when purchasing wine that you want to store. Larger champagne bottles, which tend to be fatter around the base, may not be able to fit.
Cleaning: Pretty easy
Cleaning the wine fridge proved easy. We simply wiped down the outside and inside with a slightly damp cloth. The most common cleanup issue noted by other users is when the unit frosts over. Koldfront notes that this is more likely to occur in cold or humid environments. There is a non-removable water pan to collect any condensation, but more significant frost build-ups can be cleaned by powering down the wine cooler and letting the frost melt. To deep clean your fridge, you can also periodically remove and dust the air filters, and wipe out the water pan when it becomes too full.
Price: A great gift
Retailing for roughly $260, the Koldfront 24-Bottle Wine Cooler isn’t cheap. If you’re a frequent wine drinker, though, it’s a reasonable price to pay all features considered. Most budget-friendly wine coolers don’t have the larger capacity and advanced controls of this item. More expensive wine coolers can likely hold more bottles, making them harder to find a suitable place for without dedicating an entire room to wine storage.
We think that this wine cooler would make a great gift for a couple that enjoys wine. It strikes a good balance between features and value. Smaller wine fridges can be purchased for less, but they have limited capacity.
Competition: Great value for the size
Kalamera 15-inch Wine Cooler: If you’re looking for a slightly larger wine fridge but with many of the same features, check out the Kalamera 15-inch Wine Cooler. It has similar temperature controls, a stainless steel and glass front, and an interior LED light. It only has one temperature zone with a temperature range of 40 to 66 degrees, however. It can be used as a freestanding unit or a built-in wine fridge, which some may prefer when designing an at-home bar. It comes with a higher price tag of around $600, so you’ll need to decide if these extra features are worth paying more for.
Ivation 18-Bottle Thermoelectric Red and White Wine Cooler: If you’re looking for a lower priced item, the Ivation 18-Bottle Wine Cooler can be found for around $170. To get those savings, you’ll need to sacrifice some key features. The Ivation wine cooler has a smaller capacity, a single-zone temperature range of 54 to 64 degrees, and a smokey glass door. It’s a well-reviewed wine cooler that’s a good option for those just starting to drink and store wine, or those who are shopping on a budget. You can get an upgraded version with stainless steel and wooden shelves, but it will cost around $30 more.
