Laphroaig single malt Scotch whisky is one of the most recognizable whiskies in the world. Those that love big, smoky and briny Islay whiskies will find themselves enamored with Laphroaig.

The Laphroaig distillery has been operating for over 200 years and was started by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston in 1815. The duo's initial intention was to raise cattle though they quickly found out that distilling whisky was more lucrative.

Today, Laphroaig produces a number of expressions of Scotch whisky and each hold the characteristic peaty smoke and salty notes that have become the distillery's signature taste. The 10-year-old single malt is not only the flagship marque but also the world's best-selling Islay single malt whisky.

Tasting Notes

Nose: On the nose, Laphroaig 10-year exhibits huge peat smoke notes, almost reminiscent of an extinguished campfire on the beach. There is a certain briny quality evident, as well as a slight hint of wet seaweed and perhaps just a touch of vanilla.

Body and Palate: Laphroaig 10 Year Old is a big, full-bodied, and mouth coating single malt whisky with a slightly oily mouthfeel. On the palate, Laphroaig 10 offers predominant smoky flavors, peat smoke and campfire tones intermingled with a bit of creosote.

A hint of salt air emerges to linger on the palate, you can clearly tell that this whisky is produced in a maritime climate.

A slight vanilla and caramel note becomes apparent underneath all of the smoke and salt to balance out these huge flavors.

Finish: On the finish, Laphroaig 10 offers a long, lingering and powerful medley of smoke, salt and caramel to stand up to other big flavors. For whisky enthusiasts who enjoy a big, bold whisky, Laphroaig 10 is guaranteed to please.

Final Thoughts

Laphroaig 10 would pair perfectly with a cigar as its bold flavor profile will complement the flavor of the cigar. I personally enjoy Laphroaig 10 as a nightcap in front of a fire on a cold, rainy day with a good book and it also makes an excellent after-dinner scotch.
