This simple lemon sauce is made with lemon juice, cornstarch, sugar, and butter. Drizzle the sauce over slices of cake, bread pudding, gingerbread, or pancakes.

What You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (slightly rounded)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water (boiling)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon peel (finely grated)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (fresh)
  • 1 tablespoon butter

How to Make It

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Add the boiling water and whisk to blend.
  2. Place the pan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly until mixture is thick and clear.
  3. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in lemon zest, lemon juice, and butter.
  4. Serve warm over dessert, pound cake,  or bread pudding.
