The classic mix of beer and lemonade, known as a Shandy, is a great drink and it is a base that begs for experimentation. So, when I was playing with lilac simple syrup and created a lilac lemonade, I had to wonder, "What if we made this into a Shandy?" That is how the lilac shandy was born and it is a great way to mix your beer in the spring when lilacs are in bloom.
As all shandies go, this is a simple recipe and all you need is beer and lemonade. In this case, we are making the standard fresh lemonade recipe and using the lilac syrup instead of plain syrup, then adding a light, spring-like beer to the mix.
Any light-colored beer will work perfectly here. I happened to have used Corona, though many of the pale ales and light lagers would work as well. You might also try playing with any of the spring and summer releases from craft breweries because they should have that perfect profile for this drink.
The Lilac Shandy is perfect for a day in the garden or a patio barbecue. Make the lilac lemonade for the kids and you're halfway there.
