Maria Bishop's outstanding Volitans Lionfish (Pterois volitans) Picture.

The Volitans prefers to spend most of its time in the open. It is quite long-lived and grows large (to 15"), so it should have a large tank. This fish will consume small fish and shrimp (whatever it can fit in its mouth), so tankmates should be on the large size if they expect to survive for long. The spines of the Volitans contain a powerful toxin which can cause a very painful (or even fatal, if you are allergic) sting.

Stan & Debbie Hauter's Volitans Lionfish (Pterois volitans) photo.

The Volitans Lionfish is not a fish that will live with any other fish. Given the opportunity, the Lionfish will consume anything that moves and that it can get into its mouth. Most aquarists with Lionfish have found that it is much more convenient to wean the fish from live foods and onto frozen foods such as Krill.

The Lionfish is a member of the Scorpaenidae Family which contains nothing but poisonous fish. The sting...MORE from the Lionfish, while painful, is not fatal unless your are allergic to the particular poison. If you are allergic to bee stings, you are probably allergic to the Lionfish sting.

See Scorpionfish Envenomations & First-Aid Tips in the case of a sting.
