    Little Girl's Sundress

    If you're a knitting-in-the-round novice, now is your chance to get some practice! This little sundress knits up quick in medium weight yarn, and is all in one piece with no sewing involved!

    Materials:

    • 6 (7, 8, 9) skeins of medium weight yarn of your choice, such as Reynolds Santana, or about 612 (714, 816, 918) yards
    • 24 inch size 8 US (5 mm) circular needle
    • 16 inch size 8 US (5 mm) circular needle
    • stitch marker, scissors, tape measure and yarn needle
    • row counter
    • 4 stitch holders

    Gauge:

    4 stitches and 6...MORE rows per inch in Stockinette Stitch

    Size:

    to fit a 2-year-old (4-year-old, 6-year-old, 8-year-old). Instructions are given in smallest size first with instructions for larger sizes below or in parentheses.

    Chest size finished garment: 22 (24, 26, 28) inches

    Length from back neck: 20.5 (23.5, 26.5, 29.5) inches (see schematic for more measurements)

    Knit the Skirt

    Starting the Skirt:

    1. Using Frilled Cast On, cast on 176 (192, 208, 224) stitches.
    2. Place marker and join in the round being careful not to twist. Work 1 round in Stockinette Stitch, placing a marker every 16 stitches. There are now 11 (12, 13, 14) sections around the skirt.
    3. Set row counter to Row 1. Continue with instructions for the size you are working below.

    Size 2 Years:

    1. Round 1: *yarn over, knit 14, knit 2 together. Repeat from * to end of round.
    2. Round 2: Knit.
    3. These two rounds establish the swirl...MORE pattern -- repeat them, working the decrease round (see below) on rounds 6, 12, 20, 28, 38, 48, 60 and 72.
    4. Decrease round: *Work to last 2 stitches before marker, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round (11 sts decreased).
    5. Continue without decreases in swirl pattern until skirt measures 14 inches.

    Size 4 Years:

    1. Round 1: *YO, K14, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round.
    2. Round 2: Knit.
    3. These two rounds establish the swirl pattern -- repeat them, working the decrease round on rounds 7, 15, 24, 34, 45, 57, 70 and 84.
    4. Decrease round on even rounds: Work to 2 sts before marker, K2tog. Repeat all around (11 sts decreased).
    5. Decrease round on odd rows: *YO, K2tog, knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round (12 sts decreased).
    6. Continue without decreases in swirl pattern until skirt measures 16 inches.

    Size 6 Years:

    1. Round 1: *YO, K14, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round.
    2. Round 2: Knit.
    3. These two rounds establish the swirl pattern -- repeat them, working the decrease round on rounds 9, 18, 29, 40, 53, 66, 81 and 96.
    4. Decrease round on even rounds: Work to 2 sts before marker, K2tog. Repeat all around (11 sts decreased).
    5. Decrease round on odd rows: *YO, K2tog, knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round (13 sts decreased).
    6. Continue without decreases in swirl pattern until skirt measures 18 inches.

    Size 8 Years:

    1. Round 1: *YO, K14, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round.
    2. Round 2: Knit.
    3. These two rounds establish the swirl pattern -- repeat them, working the decrease round on rounds 10, 21, 33, 46, 60, 75, 91 and 108.
    4. Decrease round on even rounds: Work to 2 sts before marker, K2tog. Repeat all around (11 sts decreased).
    5. Decrease round on odd rows: *YO, K2tog, knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog. Repeat from * to end of round (14 sts decreased).
    6. Continue without decreases in swirl pattern until skirt measures 20 inches.

    Knit the Bodice

    Knitting the Bodice:

    1. Purl 2 rounds, increasing 1 stitch at end of second round. 89 (97, 105, 113) stitches.
    2. Establish Woven Stitch as follows:
      • Row 1: Knit (purl when working flat in rows).
      • Row 2: K1, *yarn to front, slip 1 purlwise, yarn to back, K1. Repeat from * to end.
      • Row 3: Knit (purl when working flat in rows).
      • Row 4: *Yarn to front, slip 1 purlwise, yarn to back, K1. Repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    3. Continue in Woven Knit Stitch until bodice measures 1.75 (2.25, 3, 3.5) inches, ending on...MORE Row 1 or Row 3, decreasing 1 stitch at end of last row. 88 (96, 104, 112) stitches.

    Knitting the Bodice

    Bodice Back:

    1. Divide for armholes as follows: Bind off 2 (2, 3, 3) sts, work 42 (46, 50, 54). Put remaining 44 (48, 52, 56) stitches on a holder; back and front are now worked separately back and forth in rows.
    2. Next row: Turn work to wrong side, BO 2 (2, 3, 3) stitches, purl to end.
    3. BO 2 (3, 3, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, maintaining the Woven Stitch pattern across remaining stitches. 36 (38, 40, 42) stitches.
    4. Continue straight until bodice back measures approximately 5 (6, 7, 8) inches,...MORE ending with a purl row.
    5. (RS) Work 12 (12, 13, 13), BO 12 (14, 14, 16) work 12 (12, 13, 13).
    6. Work each 12 (12, 13, 13) stitch strap of the bodice back separately beginning with left strap, as follows:
      • Row 1 (and all WS rows): Purl.
      • Row 2: BO 2 (2, 3, 3), work to end.
      • Row 4: slip, slip, knit, work to end.
      • Row 6: SSK, work to end.
    7. Continue in Woven Stitch until the bodice measures 6.5 (7.5, 8.5, 9.5) inches. Leave stitches on holder.
    8. Join yarn on WS and work right strap, as follows:
      • Row 1: BO 2, purl to end.
      • Row 2 (and all RS rows): Work in pattern to end.
      • Row 3: P2tog, purl to end.
      • Row 5: P2tog, purl to end.
    9. Continue in Woven Stitch until bodice measures 6.5 (7.5, 8.5, 9.5) inches. Leave stitches on holder.

    Bodice Front:

    1. Join yarn with RS facing and BO 2 (2, 3, 3) stitches at beginning of next two rows.
    2. BO 2 (3, 3, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, maintaining the Woven Stitch pattern across remaining stitches. 36 (38, 40, 42) stitches.
    3. Continue straight until bodice front measures approximately 4 (5, 6, 7) inches, ending with a purl row.
    4. Work the front neck decreases and straps as given for the bodice back, continuing the straps until they measure 6.5 (7.5, 8.5, 9.5) inches. Leave stitches on holder.

    Finishing the Sundress

    Finishing:

    Work 3-needle bind off at both shoulder straps.

    For neck edging, with a 16-inch circular needle, begin at back with RS facing and pick up and knit the 12 (14, 14, 16) bound off stitches. Then pick up and knit 8 (9, 10, 11) stitches at the left back, 14 (14, 15, 15) stitches down the left front, the 12 (14, 14, 16) bound off stitches at the front of neck, 14 (14, 15, 15) stitches up the right front, and 8 (9, 10, 11) stitches down the right back. 68 (76, 78, 84) stitches. Purl 1 round,...MORE then bind off using Picot Bind Off (casting on an extra 2 sts, and binding off 4 each time).

    For armhole edging, pick up and knit 44 (48, 50, 54) stitches around armhole edge. Purl 1 round, then bind off using Picot Bind Off. Repeat for second armhole.

    Weave in ends and block dress to schematic measurements.
