When it comes to snacking and living sugar-free, you need something that is satisfying -- otherwise, we will be back raiding the cupboards or fridge. When you are on the go and doing errands if you aren't prepared the temptation to not give into a sugar filled snack while looking for a healthier option can be a huge challenge. There aren't many store bought (read: processed) snacks that don't contain some form of sugar.
Reading labels is very important when it comes to snacking. And prepare to have your mind blown: Just because it may say "Sugar-Free" on the label, doesn't mean it actually is. The wording could be code to mean it has no added sugars, which is a big difference.
The Low Down on Moon Cheese
Snacks like string cheese, almonds, pistachios, an apple, and beef jerky are all snacks that are smart to have on hand. Recently though I was unprepared and did not have something with me while shopping at Target. I went to Starbucks for a coffee and found a package of Moon Cheese, which I'd never heard of. When I checked the label, I was pleasantly surprised to see the only ingredient listed on the label was simply cheese. No sugar, no salt -- nothing artificial. I was also surprised again when I discovered these little bites of cheese were crunchy like a chip and delicious. So delicious you'll want to eat the whole bag!
Incidentally, if you did end up eating the entire bag it still wouldn't set you up for diet failure or a guilt trip. The calories for the entire bag would be 315. Total Fat would be 22.5 grams and Total Carbs would be 4.5 grams -- not too bad. And if you are avoiding gluten by choice or necessity, it's a fabulously natural gluten free snack.
There are three flavors currently available: Cheddar Cheese, Gouda Cheese, and Pepper Jack. All three flavors are very tasty and definitely worth trying. Just a note -- the Pepper Jack is spicy, but not nose-running, dashing-for-a-drink spicy.
The recommended portion amount is 6 to 7 pieces and the package has about 4.5 servings.
