Can you find knockout deals at all furniture sales events? Not all sales merit equal attention. But if you're looking to buy furniture, you should pay attention to some of them. Holidays are often a time when you can score a deal on furniture. You just have to know the best times to shop for particular furniture items.

What to Expect During Furniture Store Sales

You might have noticed that many furniture sales events are centered on major holidays and long weekends. This is to make it convenient for buyers to shop. Buying furniture can be a time-consuming process, as there are many variables and choices available.

There are two main reasons that retailers hold furniture sales events:

  • Timely demand: There's typically consumer demand for certain types of furniture at certain times of the year. For instance, you'll often find better deals on dining room furniture around Labor Day because consumer demand is on the rise as the holiday season approaches.
  • Moving old inventory: The second reason for holding sales is that retailers want to move old inventory to make room for the new. This is usually sometime in the winter and summer to coincide with the introduction of new spring and fall collections.

No single holiday or individual sales event is the best time to buy all types of furniture. So rather than furnishing an entire home at once, you might want to space out purchases to shop deals throughout the year. The following are the most important furniture sales events that we can count on every year, as well as some of the best items to buy during each.

Presidents' Day Sales

This furniture sale coincides with Presidents' Day in February and is one of the two biggest furniture sales events of the year. The sheer number of sales being held at this time makes this a competitive event, causing it to be easier to find good prices. Retailers invest in advertising, and markdowns make prices competitive to bring in buyers.

What to Buy

While you can find different types of furniture and other home decor on sale too, this is a good time to look for living room furniture and upholstery deals. It is easy to find good prices on sofas, recliners, love seats, and other seating options.

Memorial Day Sales

Memorial Day furniture sales events are held over the last weekend of May. The long weekend—and often good weather—gives people the chance to get out and shop.

What to Buy

This sale is more of a general furniture sale. You might find good deals on recliners as Father's Day approaches and retailers are catering to that demand. Also, look at mattresses and bedroom sets. In addition, as summer starts, outdoor furniture will be on sale.

Fourth of July Sales

Fourth of July furniture sales are also big, as many people have some free time to get out in the nice summer weather and shop. Also, stores are moving old furniture collections out of showrooms to make room for new furniture.

What to Buy

Everything is on sale. This is one time of year when you might find clearance prices on lots of items as retailers make room for new furniture. Patio furniture sets are on sale because there is a high demand for them at this time of the year. However, for the best price on patio furniture, wait until the end of summer for clearance prices. You also might be able to find good prices on back-to-school items and children's furniture as demand heightens over the Fourth of July.

Labor Day Sales

Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September, and Labor Day furniture sales take place over that weekend. This is one of the biggest sales events of the year.

What to Buy

This is when you will start seeing good prices on dining room sets and other case goods (e.g., bookcases and other non-upholstered items) as we are getting close to the holiday season. People are thinking about upcoming family reunions where everyone gathers around the dining table. Lighting, rugs, and accessories also sell well. And this is the time to look for clearance prices on outdoor furniture as summer ends.

Miscellaneous End-of-Year and Holiday Sales

Starting right after Thanksgiving is the best time of the year to buy furniture at clearance prices. This time frame kicks off with Black Friday sales. And there is now Cyber Monday, which is the Monday after Black Friday for online shopping sales.

What to Buy

This is another general furniture and decor sale where you should take a look at everything. Keep watching the daily deals, as they tend to change. You also might find clearance prices at retailers that don't normally hold sales throughout the year. The upside at these sales is you might get one-of-a-kind pieces at tremendous discounts. However, the downside is you might not be able to find exactly what you were looking for as the old stock dwindles.

Tip

When shopping at furniture retailers in person, it's ideal to have your room measurements written down to know exactly how much space you have for a piece of furniture. Be sure to measure doorways to the room as well. And bring a tape measure with you to measure furniture at the store.
