Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum is a beautifully solera blended bottling from one of the oldest rum producers and is aged for 15 years. This company first introduced Matusalem in 1792 in Cuba, but after Castro gained control of the country the family producing it went into exile and after many years of inner turmoil the brand was relaunched in 2001 and we are the lucky recipients. The name Matusalem eludes to this tradition and comes from a Spanish proverb “Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem” - or "It’s older than Methuselah" (an almost ageless 969-year-old from the Old Testament).

Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum Review

What is so spectacular about Matusalem Gran Reserva? Simply put, it is a well-crafted, aged rum that can play the leading role in any drink you want to make with it. The solera blending is the key to this rum's complexity. The process is typically used for sherry and has been adopted by only a few spirits producers because of the time needed to blend young rum with older rums over and over again in French oak casks until the perfect blend is obtained. The result is a light oakiness and a rich, buttery palate with so much happening that you almost hate to swallow, but once you do you reap the rewards of the drier finish.

I've tried many cocktails with Matusalem Gran Reserva and have never been even slightly disappointed. The sentiment seems relatively universal among others who have taste this rum. So, I really don't have any recommendations other than find your favorite rum cocktail and it will likely be the best you've had in a long time.

Tasting Notes

The nose is lightly sweet and caramelized with waves of oak and citrus. This is a lighter, medium-bodied, amber colored rum. It has a silky and rich, yet gentle palate enriched with buttery caramel and a faint oak. The finish is a bit dry, sweet and lasting.
