It's that time of year again, folks; Mercury is in retrograde.

Mercury is the planet that rules communication, thinking, technology, travel, etc. When Mercury finds itself in retrograde, it means that these areas, in particular, are impacted in confusing and often frustrating ways. It's a time rife with opportunities for miscommunication, mishaps, and disrupted plans. While there truly isn't a convenient time for the infamous phenomenon to occur, this year has Valentine's Day placed right in the middle. Given that the romantic holiday is a prime time to express how we feel about the people we love, this can seem pretty nerve-wracking. However, it doesn't mean your day is destined for disaster, especially if you know what to look out for!

Check out your zodiac sign below to see what Mercury in Retrograde means for your zodiac sign!

  • 01 of 12

    Aquarius: January 20th-February 18th

This retrograde feels pretty personal to you, given that Mercury (amongst several other planets) is in the sign of Aquarius. You may be feeling detached and having a hard time knowing what you want or need. Valentine's Day can seem like a ton of pressure, but it doesn't have to be! Try to unwind with your significant other, and don't plan a ton of specific activities. Instead, try to enjoy simply being together. If you need some time to process your romantic feelings or need to discuss your relationship, let your partner know directly. Otherwise, focus on your relationship's friendship elements instead of trying to be romantic out of obligation. Don't make any significant decisions today if you can avoid it, just express how you feel in the purest way you can.

    Pisces: February 19th-March 20th

Your mindset is being challenged throughout the retrograde, and you've needed time to process. You're doing a lot of soul-searching, so take today to relax with your partner (or with yourself!). You are longing for a deep connection, but don't try and force it. Indulge in some self-care for you and with your partner, whether that's a luxurious bubble bath or reading a favorite book together, so you can both feel reenergized and connected.

    Aries: March 21st-April 19th

You're likely feeling the need to make a major decision about your life quickly. Still, you don't automatically give in to the pressure. You're feeling restless and impulsive, which during this time could lead to some disastrous results if you're not careful. Valentine's Day can feel like the best day for grand gestures, but do the best you can to slow down and think things through before making commitments you can't take back. There are many more subtle ways to express how you feel, like simply telling them how much you care or buy them a small gift. Try to focus on the simple aspects of your relationship; they can often be the most overlooked.

    Taurus: April 20th-May 20th

You've been feeling the pressure at work lately, and Valentine's Day may potentially fall into the crossfire. Many people seem to be demanding energy from you but don't feel like you have to stretch yourself thin. You've had trouble fully communicating what you want out of your relationship, and you feel the need to discuss it, but there is a chance it could be misconstrued. Try to be as clear cut and honest as you can, and even playing a game that fosters communication could be a great way to spend the evening!

    Gemini: May 21st-June 20th

With Mercury as your ruling planet, it's no surprise that you're feeling the impact of this retrograde. You're longing for a chance to get away, but planning a trip during a retrograde and a pandemic isn't shaping up to be the best time. Instead, try to open your mind to doing ordinary things in a new way and let Valentine's Day show off your creativity. Recreating your first date within your home may seem daunting, but it can also be a memorable experience that takes you back in time, which is still kind of traveling, right?

    Cancer: June 21st-July 22nd

This retrograde has asked you to do some deep emotional inventory, and Valentine's Day is no exception. You've likely been reflecting on past relationships, but not because you're longing to return to them. You're trying to heal from past wounds and determine what boundaries you need to set in your relationships. The 14th is a great day to celebrate your current love, perhaps by putting together a photo album or scrapbook documenting your relationship so far! This day is also an excellent opportunity to discuss with your partner what you need and what you're learning about yourself. This day has great potential to strengthen the relationship if you feel you can safely open up.

    Leo: July 23rd-August 22nd

This retrograde as a whole is hitting your relationships hard, and Valentine's Day isn't letting up on that theme. You've felt confused about the relationship, and there may be uncertainty about your intentions. You may not even want to celebrate the holiday, or you could feel the need to go over the top in a last-ditch effort to work things out. Neither of these will work for you! Don't feel the need to overcompensate; it will likely only make things worse. Keep your head down during the rough patch, and prioritize small acts of intimacy again, like watching a romantic movie together or writing a thoughtful note. Small steps, Leo.

    Virgo: August 23rd- September 22nd

You're a master at making plans, but with Mercury also serving as your ruling planet, you know to expect some mishaps. Trying to schedule out the perfect Valentine's Day date will likely be appreciated, but won't turn out as hoped, leaving you stuck in your head all day about what went wrong. Create an open plan (I know, I know) that has plenty of flexibility so that regardless of what happens, you can focus on your date for the evening.

    Libra: September 23rd- October 22nd

You've felt that relationship-wise, things have hit a lull. This retrograde likely has some old flames popping back in again to "see how you're doing," but approach with caution. If you're single and want a chance to reconnect, go for it, but remember, it likely won't last long. If you're in a relationship and feel things are in a rut, do something out of the box. Whether it's intimate or a new activity you've meant to try, the day of romance can be a perfect excuse to jump start things again.

    Scorpio: October 23rd- November 21st

Lately, you've likely been feeling the heaviness of some emotional issues making themselves known. Acknowledging them isn't a bad thing, but a break is necessary. On Valentine's Day, try to focus on some alone time with your partner to relax from everything weighing you down. Ordering in from your favorite restaurant and queuing up Netlfix is a perfect way to spend the evening. What you need is to be taken care of by the person who loves and supports you.

    Sagittarius: November 22nd-December 21st

You have a lot of emotions bubbling up, but don't move so fast! Even if you have the best of intentions, you're likely going to come up against some severe miscommunications on what you're trying to say. Slow down and think before you speak. Your partner needs to hear how you're feeling, but be intentional and deliberate. Writing a heartfelt letter or creating something could be a great way to think about what you want to say romantically. No need to rush!

    Capricorn: December 22nd- January 19th

You've been under a lot of money pressure lately, and Valentine's Day may be causing your stress to go into overdrive. You're constantly stressing about your budget and are stuck in your head, which might make your significant other feel a bit underappreciated. While it can be easy to believe extravagant tangible gifts are required, there are plenty of inexpensive ways to get your point across. Make dinner together at home with some candles and your favorite music. It's simple but effective!
