Molasses and spices flavor this delicious old-fashioned bread pudding recipe, along with the addition of raisins or chopped dates. Use sorghum molasses if you have it. Serve with whipped cream, ice cream, or your favorite dessert sauce.

What You'll Need

  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup light molasses
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups dry bread cubes
  • 1/3 cup chopped dates or raisins

How to Make It

  1. In a medium saucepan scald the milk. Remove from heat and stir in molasses, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, salt and butter; stir until well blended.
  2. In a large mixing bowl beat eggs slightly. Gradually pour hot milk over eggs, whisking or stirring briskly.
  3. Place bread cubes and dates or raisins into a shallow buttered 2-quart baking dish, approximately 11x7x2 inches. Pour milk mixture over the bread and fruit and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Stir gently.
  1. Place baking dish in a larger pan and add about an inch of hot water to the outer pan. Bake at 350 F for about 45 minutes, until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm or cold with cream or dessert sauce.
