An old fashioned recipe for dumplings cooked in a syrup made with vinegar and sugar. These dumplings were apparently made as a dessert, probably in the 1940s, when fruit was not readily available or affordable.

What You'll Need

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Pinch of salt
  • Dumplings:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking baking powder

How to Make It

  1. In a pan, mix water and cornstarch thoroughly. Add sugar, vinegar, and salt; bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  2. In a bowl, mix dumpling ingredients as for drop biscuits, mixing just until blended.
  3. Drop the dumpling dough into the boiling syrup, 1 teaspoon at a time. Cook until done. To test for doneness, stick with toothpick to see if the center is doughy.
