Edging for Openwork Crochet Dishcloth

    Instructions for Crocheting the Edging on the Dishcloth

    This is an edging to crochet for the cotton openwork dishcloth.


    Work in back loops of stitches unless otherwise directed.


    Place a marker around the last stitch in your last row to keep track of where your edging begins.


    To begin the edging, you will need to rotate your work clockwise so that the left-hand edge of your work faces up.


    Round 1: Ch 2. Work 36 sc across the top edge of the work, making sure to space them evenly.


    To Form Corner: Ch 2, and rotate work clockwise so that your foundation...MORE chain is facing upward. Work another sc st in the same st as your last sc worked.


    Sc in each loop of your starting chain. (36 sc.)


    To Form Corner: Ch 2, Turn work clockwise. Work another sc st in the same st as your last sc worked.


    Work 36 more sc across the top edge of the work, making sure to space the sts evenly. (37 sc.)


    To Form Corner: Ch 2, rotate work clockwise. Work another sc st in the same st as your last sc worked.


    Complete the row working in SC. (37 sc total.) When you reach the end of the row, ch 2 and work a sl st to join the ch sts to the beginning of the round.

    Round 2: Ch 2 , sc in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in following sc st, (ch 1, skip next sc, sc in following sc). Repeat sequence in parentheses 15 more times. Ch 1, sc in corner ch2 space.


    Ch 2 to form corner and rotate work.

    Ch 2 to form corner and rotate work.

    Ch 2 to form corner and turn work. Sc in same ch2 corner space that last sc st was worked. Sl st to join to beg of round.

    In this round, work all dc sts into the ch1 spaces formed in the previous row.


    Ch 3. Dc, skipping next sc and inserting hook into the following ch1 space. Ch 1, dc in same ch1 space as previous dc. (Ch 1. Dc, skipping next ch1 space and inserting hook into the following ch1 space. Ch 1, dc in same ch1 space as previous dc.) Repeat sequence in parentheses 8 more times. Ch 1, dc in ch 2 corner space.


    Ch 3 to form corner and rotate work.

    Round 6: In this round, crochet all the sc sts by inserting your hook into the ch1 spaces formed in the previous row.


    Ch 2. (Sc into the next ch1 space between dc sts. Ch 3, sl st to first ch to form a picot. Sc into same ch1 space. Sc into next ch1 space.) Repeat sequence inside parentheses 9 more times.


    In the corner space, work 2 sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 2 sc.


    Sc into next ch1 space. (Sc into the next ch1 space between dc sts. Ch 3, sl st to first ch to form a picot. Sc into same ch1 space. Sc into...MORE next ch1 space.) Repeat sequence inside parentheses 10 more times.


    In the corner space, work 2 sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 2 sc.

    Optional Slip Stitch Detailing: A textured ridge made up of slip stitches provides an additional border between the dishcloth and the edging. Work slip stitches all the way around the dishcloth in between the border and the body of the dishcloth.
