The traditional Japanese origami lantern is a very easy model to make - it will take you about 5 minutes to learn this!

The Japanese lantern is one of the many decorations at Tanabata or the 'Star Festival' - In Japanese 'Lantern' is pronounced 'Torro' and is written as 灯籠.

At Tanabata, Japanese people celebrate the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi, deities who are lovers -they are only allowed to meet one day a year, the day of the festival falls at a different date each...MORE year in July or August.

People celebrate by writing wishes or poetry, on tanzaku - strips of paper that are then hung upon a bamboo tree or 'wish tree', people also hang different origami decorations such as origami stars, streamers, lanterns and wreaths.

For this model start by getting the biggest paper you have, the lantern ends up quite small!

You will only need one sheet, it would be better if the paper didn't have a white side as it might show through.

If you make lots of these lanterns, you can turn them into a 'Yakko' ornament by attaching them to each other top to bottom and using a string to hang them.

If you love making Japanese decorations, check out my website, Paper Kawaii, where I post regular video tutorials on how to make many different origami decorations.
