We tested the chair and found that the coated mesh dries quickly. It can easily be cleaned with a hose, so there's no need to worry about dirt or stains.

One of the major benefits of this recliner is that it requires no assembly. However, it's worth noting that it is only available in a single color: mocha. Despite this limitation, the chair's versatility and comfort make it a great addition to any household.

Final Verdict

If you want peak relaxation, you’ll enjoy the Frontgate Original Mesh Zero-Gravity Recliner, which is comfortable to sit in and quite durable. If you’re prepared to splurge and want an option whose appearance will change for the better as time goes on, consider the Astola Recliner. For a more affordable option, try the Red Barrel Studio Outdoor Metal Chaise Lounge, which doesn’t skimp on comfort or durability, despite its budget-friendly price.

What to Look For in an Outdoor Recliner

Size

When purchasing furniture for your outdoor area, it's important to take size into account. “For aesthetics, it's important to consider the scale of the room and the other furniture within the space,” Jennifer Stephan, stylist and interior designer of Jennifer Stephan Interiors, says. Keep in mind you don't want the furniture to dominate the room, but you also don't want it to appear too sparse.

For instance, the Ulax Furniture Outdoor Recliner takes up limited space when the footrest isn’t engaged. That’s true, too for the Hamilton Folding & Reclining Adirondack Chair

But it’s not just the size of your space that matters. You’ll also want to consider the size of the recliner itself. For comfort, “your feet should be able to touch the ground and your head should be supported by the headrest,” Stephan says.

Jade Joyner, co-founder and principal designer for Metal + Petal, recommends considering all aspects of the recliner’s size, including its width, the back height, and the arm's size. Make sure it’s comfortable for your frame. The Red Barrel Studio Outdoor Metal Chaise Lounge is a particularly good fit for taller people, while the Northridge Outdoor Chaise Lounge Set with Sunbrella Cushions offers a weight capacity of 400 pounds.

Style

There are plenty of options available for recliner styles, as well as for patio furniture styles in general. “A few examples are traditional, contemporary, glider, and wall hugger,” Stephan says.

If you’re unsure how to choose an outdoor recliner, think about your material first, then choose a style from there. For instance, the Grand Patio Wicker Recliner is ideal for wicker lovers.

Think about your style requirements, too, Stephan says. “For example, if you're looking for something more timeless and comfortable, you'll likely consider something on the traditional side as they are typically larger and provide more comfort,” she says. On the other hand, contemporary furniture will have a sleeker look with fewer materials. That’s great for small spaces, although it may mean a less comfortable option.

“Whatever you choose, remember that your exterior should be an extension of your interior and work with the style of your home,” Joyner says. The recliner must also fit in with the rest of the furniture on your patio or outdoor space.

Material

What a recliner is made out of dictates how long it’ll last. When it comes to choosing outdoor fabric, look for material that’s durable and has high UV ratings. “We lean into Sunbrella fabrics and Schumacher's line of outdoor materials,” Joyner says. You’ll find Sunbrella as an option in the Astola Recliner, for instance, and in the Northridge Outdoor Chaise Lounge Set with Sunbrella Cushions

For the frame, look for chairs made from aluminum, teak, wicker, and resin.

Comfort

When choosing a recliner, it's important to prioritize comfort. Consider the level of firmness or softness that you prefer and the range of positions the recliner can adjust to. This will help you find a recliner that meets your specific needs and preferences.

If you’re stumped about how to know if a chair will be comfortable, Joyner suggests this strategy: Find a comfortable chair in your living room, then look for a recliner with similar dimensions. Think about how easy it’ll be to sit down in the chair and then haul yourself out of it. Reclining in a low chair can be comfortable, but sometimes it’s hard to get up from this type of chair.

Having many recline positions, as with the CosmoLiving by Cosmopolitan Lita Recliner Patio Chair and Ottoman, which offers four recliner positions, often makes finding an option that works well for you easier. This can also be important if multiple family members or visiting friends will be sitting in the recliner.

FAQ
  • How should you store and protect recliners in the winter?

It’s best to store furniture indoors for the winter to protect them from moisture and cold. Stephan says before you pack recliners away, make sure they’re clean and dry.

Place a waterproof cover on furniture while it’s stored. “Avoid stacking other furniture or items on top of the covered recliner,” Stephan says.

Before purchasing, it’s a good idea to consider your storage preferences and how much storage space you have. Some chairs fold up into a compact unit to store away easily, while others could be harder to pack away. If you don’t want to move your recliner, another option is to consider getting outdoor furniture covers. But even if you keep your recliner outside, it’s a good idea to bring the cushions inside. Doing so increases the longevity of the piece.

  • What types of outdoor furniture pair best with recliners?

Some recliners are sold individually but come as part of a larger set. “For your exterior furniture, a more put-together look is ideal,” Joyner says. Look for options with matching sofas, ottomans, and chairs.  That said, if your aesthetic is less matchy-matchy, you can opt to mix and match different styles and materials.

If your recliner doesn’t come with a tray or cup holder, a side table will be handy for keeping drinks, snacks, books, and other small items nearby. Choose a “small fun side table that reflects your style and/or mood!” suggests Donna Dickerman, founder and principal designer at Dickerman Design. “There are an abundance of small tables that are offered in an array of materials, colors, and form,” Dickerman says.

  • What is the most durable fabric for outdoor furniture?

According to Stephan and Joyner, Sunbrella is a highly durable material for outdoor use and comes in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures. If Sunbrella is unavailable, it's important to choose a fabric specifically designed for outdoor use with a high UV rating to prevent fading from sun exposure over time.
