This easy family dinner recipe is perfect for a busy weeknight as it doesn't require a lot of chopping or dicing—simply prep the sauce and baste the bird! Turn mealtime into a picnic by serving this barbecue baked chicken with coleslaw and potato salad

The barbecue sauce is cooked on the stove first, before pouring over the chicken and placing in the oven. If you like your barbecue sauce spicy, add a bit of hot sauce or chili paste. You can also use molasses, replace the brown sugar with honey or add a little Asian twist with a bit of soy sauce or hoisin sauce. Of course, if you have a favorite barbecue sauce recipe, feel free to use it in place of the recipe we've provided.

What You'll Need

  • 3 pounds chicken parts
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup vinegar (such as apple cider, distilled or balsamic)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

How to Make It

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Rinse and pat chicken dry with paper towels.
  2. In a saucepan, combine remaining ingredients over medium heat; heat thoroughly.
  3. Sprinkle chicken with a little salt and pepper and put in a shallow casserole. Pour heated sauce over chicken. Cover and bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, basting occasionally.
