As a family-owned business that started in Oxfordshire, U.K., and now has showrooms in London, Paris, New York, and Taiwan, the team at lighting company Orignal BTC knows that easier isn’t always better. Their attention to detail is clear in their stunning light fixtures. But, when they found a glazing tool that finishes the job faster and more perfect than the alternative, they were thrilled to so share it with us. And best of all? It’s a tool that can be used for a wide variety of home projects.
We recently spoke to Andrew John Bettany, Production Manager at Original BTC’s Stoke-on-Trent Factory, who gave us all the details on how they finish each fixture to their incredibly high standard.
What item made your work life easier this week/month/lately?
Andrew John Bettany: Definitely our spray guns. We work with china using the slip-cast method to create each lighting fixture.

AJB: Once fixtures are firmed up, removed from the molds, and refined, it is crucial that we apply an even coating of glaze. For smaller items, we will tip the fixtures, but for fixtures that are too large to dip, we use paint spray guns.
Why is this item so great?
AJB: The spray gun is the perfect item to get an even layer of glaze onto a piece. The large amounts of mist that the guns provide allow us to cover each surface quickly and in a uniform fashion.
Where/how do you use this item most?
AJB: We only use the spray guns in our spray booth. This workspace specifically dedicated to spraying glaze allows us to extract out and reuse all of the overspray. It is extremely important to us that we are as resourceful and sustainably conscious as possible.
How did you discover this item?
Will you use this item in the future?
AJB: Absolutely. I use the spray guns on a daily basis.
How has this item made your job easier?
AJB: It is the best way to coat items that can’t be dipped. Without the spray gun, we would have to hand paint, which would create unwanted brush strokes and inconsistent fixtures. Not only is the spray gun the only logical option for large items, but it is easy to use and provides a reliable result.
How might someone not in your line of work benefit from this item?
AJB: A spray gun could be useful for spraying a fence or even a car. It can really be useful for any large fixture that requires an even coating of glaze or paint.
What, if anything, would you change about this item?
AJB: I wouldn’t change anything. It’s a good tool.
Are there any care/use tips someone considering this item should know about?
AJB: Aftercare is incredibly important. After I use it each time, I strip it down, clean it, and put vaseline on the needle to prevent any sticking.
