Discover how easy it is to create your own volcano using an empty pop bottle, some cardboard, and paper mache techniques. You can even make this volcano erupt once you have it all done.
- Empty Soda Pop Bottle
- Masking Tape
- Paper Mache Paste
Start out by placing the bottle in the center of a piece of cardboard that is about 2-feet square. Secure it in place using the masking tape.
Use strips of cardboard to form your mountain by taping one end to the top of the bottle and the other end onto the cardboard so it descends out at an angle. Once you are satisfied with the shape of your mountain, you are ready to paper mache.
Browse through my paper mache paste recipes to find one you want to try. I would suggest the simple mixture of flour and water shared in the no-cook paste recipe. Once you have your paste made, follow these simple step-by-step directions to add several layers of paper mache to your volcano. Let the paper mache dry.
Next you will want to paint your volcano. Choose whatever color you like and give it as much detail as you want. Let the paint dry completely before you move on to the next step, which is how to make your volcano erupt!
First of all, place your volcano on a sturdy surface. The best place for this is outside or on a hard surface that is easy to clean, just in case your volcano erupts more than you want it to. Now gather together the supplies you need to make the eruption:
- 1 Tablespoon Warm Water
- Liquid Dish Washing Soap
- Food Coloring
- 1 Tablespoon of Baking Soda
- Small, Paper Cup
Start off by measuring the water into your volcano crater (the bottle).
Add 3 to 4 drops of dish washing soap and 3 to 4 drops of food coloring. Stir in the baking soda. Pour some vinegar into the small, paper cup so the cup is about 1/3 full. Quickly pour the vinegar into your volcano crater, step back, and watch your volcano's bubbly eruption!
