Patrón is a popular tequila brand and their Silver Tequila is one of the hottest spirits on the market, that can be found in almost every bar and liquor store. While many tequila aficionados discredit it and there are, admittedly, many tequilas that outrank it in quality and flavor, Patrón Silver is the perfect introductory tequila.
Patrón Silver is one of those tequilas that can turn anyone onto tequila.
It is fully flavored with agave without being too overwhelming. It is smooth and is a good cocktail mixer, making a great Margarita, a fun Tequila Sunrise, and a tasty Paloma. It is also one of the better tequilas to use if you are drawn to tequila shots.
How Patron Tequila is Made
All of Patron's tequilas are distilled from 100% Weber blue agave in the highlands of Jalisco. The agave piñas are harvested at around 8 years of growth and sent to the nearby Hacienda Patrón distillery to begin the process of making tequila.
A rare thing in modern tequila production is the use of the tahona wheel and Patrón is one of the few distilleries that continue to employ this traditional method of crushing the baked agave. They do also use the modern roller methods. It is the job of the master distiller to combine the two to make the recipe for Patrón.
I think that this method adds to the flavor we find in Patrón and other tequilas that use it.
There is something about the old-fashioned way of extracting the juice that adds depth to the spirit. Even if it is a partial mix, it makes a significant difference.
Patrón Silver Tequila is the base for the Patron products and is unaged. Within this same line, Patrón also produces a reposado and añejo tequila.
The brand's portfolio continues to grow and includes:
- The Roca Patrón line (including a silver, reposado, and añejo), which uses the tahona process exclusively.
- The luxury-grade Gran Patrón line that includes Platinum, Piedra, and Burdeos.
- Sweet liqueurs including XO Cafe (coffee), Dark Cocoa, Incendio (chocolate and Arbol chile).
- Citrus liqueurs under the name Patrón Citrónge in lime, mango, and orange flavors.
Patron is also notable for its unique bottles. The squat glass bottles have a bee hive-like shape that is hand-molded from a mostly recycled glass. They also employ the use of a hand-cut cork from Portugal that adds to the brand's environmental consciousness.
The Review of Patrón Silver Tequila
The mixability of Patrón Silver is where my fascination truly lies. Sure, it is good to sip, but it really is best in a balanced mixed drink with fresh fruits.
It is not limited to just a few fruit flavors, either. I have tried it with everything from orange to blackberry and grapefruit to cranberry. This is a tequila that loves fruit and its waves of sweetened agave come through the back of the fruit in such a delightful way that is hard to resist.
An earthy "sunshine" feeling touches the nose with a sweet and soft agave kiss that is tantalizing. The palate is ultra smooth and sultry, transforming into a warm caramel with soft butter and a light spice. It finishes with a stronger spice and a long, warm sweetness.
Is Patrón Silver Worth the Price?
I think many tequila drinkers find issue with Patrón. Is Patrón Silver really worth the $40 price tag?
As much as I enjoy Patrón, I will not purchase it at full retail price. There are better tasting tequilas available that are a better use of my money. I would take the blanco from Corazon (also around $40) over Patrón any day.
If I can find Patrón Silver on sale for anything around $30 (it is possible!), then it comes home with me because I feel that this price range is a better fit in comparison to other tequilas.
Patrón is a perfect example of great marketing and the notion that price equals quality. Many drinkers who are new to tequila fall into this trap and rely on name recognition to guide them to their selections.
For those who enjoy Patrón and believe it to be (as I often hear) 'the best tequila,' I encourage you to search for and explore tequilas within the same price range. The other options out there will really surprise you.
