Big kids with big missions need a big playset—and that’s exactly what your tot will get with the PAW Patrol My Size Lookout Tower. Based on the ever-popular Nickelodeon kids show, this tower is the Cadillac of PAW Patrol toys. It’s tall, interactive, and filled with features that bring the excitement of Adventure Bay’s rescue pups right into your home. To find out if it lived up to our expectations, we observed as our very own tiny rescuers play with the set and evaluated the entertainment value, quality of the design, and more. Here’s what we found.

Design: Oversized, but easy to assemble

There’s no denying it: this playset will take over your space and it’s all but guaranteed to clash with your decor. Standing more than 2.5 feet tall, the lookout tower is the size of your average 3-year-old. That said, it turned out to be the perfect height to keep our toddler up and moving. The colorful vehicle launcher at the base of the tower isn’t necessarily the pop of color we envisioned in our living room, but we still welcomed it because it stimulated play, and our son spent a lot of time rotating it to line it up with the end of the ramp.

Though it’s quick to assemble (it took all but 10 minutes to put together), snapping the parts together took a lot of strength. There’s very little room for error: if you mess up, it’s difficult to take the playset apart and start over. Made of plastic, the tower is fairly light and easy to move around. Though it feels like it could easily break, we found it can actually take quite a beating. Our son plays rough, and aside from one instance when we had to re-align the elevator, the tower remained unscathed—which is good news considering the price.

Entertainment Value: Hours of play, but a couple of flaws

The lookout tower is packed with interactive features that will keep your child busy for a long time. Still to this day, our son plays with it for hours on end, and with unparalleled enthusiasm. Seriously, no other toys have kept him this excited and occupied for so long. He particularly loves rocketing the pups up to the control room with the elevator and he never gets tired of hearing the bell go off when the elevator reaches the top. He also enjoys keeping an eye on Adventure Bay with the periscope, and he can’t get enough of the various sound and light features that are on the top floor.

All of these entertaining features come with a few kid-upsetting defects, however. The elevator door, which doubles as a storage space for the pups’ packs, pops open every time the elevator goes up. The pups don’t slide down the ramp very well, and the flip feature at the ramp’s end doesn’t shoot them up in the air and into the trucks as well as the manufacturer claims. The last caveat turned out to be very frustrating for our toddler as he kept thinking that he was doing something wrong.

Though it feels like it could easily break, we found it can actually take quite a beating.

Educational Value: Learning cause and effect and endless narrative-based play

The size of the tower makes playing with it an immersive experience for kids. Our son truly felt like he was part of the Rescue Pup experience, which, in turn, enhanced his imaginative and narrative-based play. What’s more, the interactive sound and light features—spinning the periscope activates sound and pressing the red button queues up different missions—teaches kids cause and effect.

Age Range: Three years and up

Kids who can watch the Nickelodeon show—three years and up—will appreciate playing with this set. Children who are older than five may not be entertained for as long, but they are still likely to appreciate the set’s endless possibilities for imaginative play. Note that the playset includes small parts that constitute a choking hazard; it is therefore not recommended for children under three.

Cleaning: Easy to wipe clean

With two kids, we have a lot of things to wash and very little time to do it. So it was a relief to know that the PAW Patrol My Size Lookout Tower was easy to clean. Our son drew on the base of the tower, and wiping it clean with a damp, soapy cloth was a cinch. The small parts, like the pups and their packs, can also be washed in the dishwasher. Just make sure to securely place them in the silverware compartment or in an enclosed dishwasher basket.

Price: Cost is good given the size and features

The lookout tower, which sells for $99.99 MSRP (often much less at major online retailers), is pricier than other PAW Patrol toys, but comparable to other toys of the same caliber and size. The many features that will entertain your child for hours, along with the excitement on your child's face, is well worth the investment.

PAW Patrol My Size Lookout Tower vs. PJ MASKS Deluxe Headquarter Playset

PJ Masks is another hit kids show, and it too offers a kid-size playset. Just like PAW Patrol My Size Lookout Tower, the PJ MASKS Deluxe Headquarter Playset doesn’t come with all of the show’s characters, which is sure to disappoint kids as they open the box. Measuring a little over two feet tall, the PJ Masks playset is comparable in size, but it actually packs in more action, including light and sound features, a working elevator, a set of hanging rings, and even a jetpack and zipline. Retailing for approximately $69 on Amazon ($15 cheaper than the PAW Patrol set), the PJ MASKS Headquarter Playset may be a better investment depending on which show your child likes more.

Final Verdict

Yes, buy it!

If your little one needs something fresh and fun to play with (and if he’s a PAW Patrol addict), this toy is undeniably for him or her. The lookout tower offers hours of entertainment and (sadly for the flow and aesthetics of your home decor) is likely to be a hit for a long time.
