I'm sure you've seen those mail/paper/key catchers at Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, or even Homegoods (my preferred place to shop!). The problem with these is the ready-made-ness of the products: you have a certain amount of space already built into the organizer.

A better option is the DIY method. Install a pegboard, a bin to catch mail and paper work, and a pretty bowl to hold your keys. This way, you'll be customizing the items to fit your space, rather than trying to fit your...MORE stuff into someone else's design.

The garage is a great spot to organize with a pegboard because décor can be relaxed with an emphasis on function. Use pegboards for the following:

    Small Hand Tools

    • Hammers
    • Rope
    • Scissors
    • Wrenches

Anything with a handle will work, and you can always use a small cord to create a handle if necessary. Some pegboard options for the garage.

The kitchen is a room screaming for more organization and boards and hooks can really help. Here are a few ideas to try:

    • Use a magnetic boards to hold messages, meal plans, coupons and shopping lists.
    • Rather than use a large cup to hold kitchen utensil like whisks and spatulas, hook these onto pegboard.
    • Hang mugs on a pegboard.
    • Hang small pots and pans on a pegboard, and then trace their outlines, ala Julia Child.
