Frogs and Toads

There are many different species of frogs to choose from,  but not all are ideal as pets for beginners. For example, Yea Dart frogs are pretty with their bright colors, but they are fragile and harder to care for. It's best to choose a species that is bred in captivity and is known for their hardiness and good health.

Frogs can live quite a long time in a tank, so be prepared for years of commitment!

The Giant Toad lives from 7 to 24 years; the Green and Black Poison Dart Frog has a life span 7 to 17 years. And one European Common Toad is recorded as living for 40 years!

Frogs need to be fed regularly, and it's not as simple as grabbing a bag of food at the pet store. Some need live bugs while larger species feed on mice. You'll also need to clean the tank consistently as cleanliness will help prevent illness.

Keep in mind that while you might choose a cool looking frog, a lot of them don't really do much! As a beginner, consider getting a frog that's more active such as aquatic frogs, certain treefrogs and species that are less fat.
