A good pumpkin-flavored liquor is often a hard thing to find and many distillers try their hand at this very seasonal flavor, with few making it past a year or two in production. Pinnacle Vodka, one of the leaders in the dessert-flavored vodka trend, is trying their hand at the favorite flavor of fall and they did a wonderful job of making it work. Pumpkin cocktail lovers, you have a new vodka to hoard and this one is delicate enough in its pumpkin taste that it can appeal to those who are prone to shy away from the flavor.
Sweet Pumpkin Pie in a Glass
I continue to lament the loss of my favorite pumpkin vodka that was produced by Modern Spirits for a number of years. It has been the benchmark to which I compared all other pumpkin spirits since, and none has been able to live up to it. With the release of Pinnacle Pumpkin Pie Vodka, I think we have a new candidate for best pumpkin spirit currently in production.
The difference I see between the two vodkas is that this one from Pinnacle is noticeably sweeter. That is not necessarily a bad trait and is in keeping with the company whose Whipped Cream Vodka made a splash in the market, with this lineage I would expect sweetness and they have delivered. Pinnacle's take on the pumpkin pie includes whipped cream alongside the sweet pumpkin and the traditional spices of cinnamon and nutmeg. It ends up being a fair balance that gets as close to a piece of pumpkin pie done up with a dollop of cream as a vodka can get.
The fragrance is a delicate, fresh from the oven pumpkin pie, subtly marked by spices. It is a remarkably smooth vodka, sweetened slightly and has a natural pumpkin taste with an invigorating amount of spice. The finish is warming, lasting, and has a slight alcohol taste.
Drinking Pinnacle Pumpkin Pie Vodka
This vodka is good on its own -- either straight or on the rocks -- and it is fun to mix into popular cocktails for a fall twist.
If you choose to drink it on its own, do be conscious that its sweetness disguises the taste of alcohol and it is very easy to drink too much.
When it comes to mixing Pinnacle Pumpkin Pie, there are some obvious flavor pairings (cranberry, apple, cream, vanilla) and one of my favorites is a simple highball of the vodka with apple cider, garnished with a cinnamon stick (similar to the Thanksgiving Cider recipe below). Cranberry and club soda make another great mixed drink option for, and feel free to mix it into your favorite vodka cocktails with ingredients like Irish cream or creme de cacao.
The Mudslide and Chocolate Martini are two that I recommend. Ginger is a natural compliment to pumpkin and you may want to try this vodka in a Ginger Martini or Moscow Mule. Yet another delightful drink for this is the Pink Honey Martini where it would be paired with Barenjager honey liqueur and cranberry.
