Peach cobbler is the quintessential Southern dessert. It's the perfect dessert for a cookout or Fourth of July celebration. Serve the warm cobbler with a scoop of ice cream or drizzle it with cream.

What You'll Need

  • 1 large can (29 ounces) sliced peaches in syrup
  • 1 medium can (15 ounces) sliced peaches in syrup
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar mixed with 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

How to Make It

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F (180° C/Gas 4). Lightly butter an 11 by 7 inch or 9 inch square baking dish.
  2. Drain the peaches, reserving the syrup. Set aside.
  3. Toss peaches with the cinnamon and nutmeg.
  4. In a bowl combine 3/4 cup of the syrup with the cornstarch. Stir until well blended; stir into the peaches.
  5. Arrange the peaches in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Combine the 1/2 cup of sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; stir to blend thoroughly.
  1. In a small bowl whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and the vanilla extract.
  2. Stir the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. The batter will be stiff.
  3. Using a spoon, drop the batter evenly over the peaches (the topping will spread as it bakes).
  4. Drizzle with the remaining butter and then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 to 45 minutes, until topping is nicely browned.
