Peach cobbler is the quintessential Southern dessert. It's the perfect dessert for a cookout or Fourth of July celebration. Serve the warm cobbler with a scoop of ice cream or drizzle it with cream.

What You'll Need

  • 1 (29-ounce) can sliced peaches in syrup
  • 1 (15-ounce) medium can sliced peaches in syrup
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 5 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar mixed with 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

How to Make It

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180° C/Gas 4). Lightly butter an 11-by-7-inch or 9-inch square baking dish.
  2. Drain the peaches, reserving the syrup. Set aside.
  3. Toss peaches with the cinnamon and nutmeg.
  4. In a bowl combine 3/4 cup of the syrup with the cornstarch. Stir until well blended; stir into the peaches.
  5. Arrange the peaches in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Combine the 1/2 cup of sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; stir to blend thoroughly.
  1. In a small bowl whisk together the egg, milk, 3 tablespoons of the melted butter, and the vanilla extract.
  2. Stir the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. The batter will be stiff.
  3. Using a spoon, drop the batter evenly over the peaches (the topping will spread as it bakes).
  4. Drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 to 45 minutes, until topping is nicely browned.
