Whether you’re designing an office, a workroom, or a studio space, there’s one thing everyone needs: great storage. No one knows this better than Charlie and Kevin Dumais, co-founders of the Dumais Made pottery studio.

We recently connected with the duo and asked for their top must-have item, and we were thrilled to learn about their go-to multi-functional and adjustable shelves. Read on to find out why these shelves are great for both function and aesthetics.

What item made your work life easier this week/month/lately?

Charlie Dumais: An absolute staple of our work and home lives are our Rakks adjustable shelving standards and brackets.

Kevin Dumais: We love the system for its modest, modern, and utilitarian design. It has the ability to make off-the-shelf components feel custom and built-in.

CD: We work and live with these shelving systems. The design is so minimal they blend into any environment. These are great in a kitchen or even a retail shop. We always receive compliments on them.

Where/how do you use this item most?

KD: We use the system often for utility areas within our clients’ homes, laundry rooms, offices, kids’ rooms, etc. It could even work well for a family room library.

CD: We used this mounting system in our home garage studio, our study, and both Kevin’s design studio and my ceramic studio. In our den, we used a recessed version of the channel, and it is set within the seams of wood paneling. We chose black so the channels would feel like reveals. In Kevin’s studio, the system is mounted to a fabric-wrapped pin-up wall. In the ceramics studio, they are mounted throughout to hold work in progress.

How did you discover this item?

KD: It’s been in our back pocket so long that we forget how we stumbled upon the Rakks brand.

CD: Kevin.

Will you use this item in the future?

KD: Yes! We are currently designing a kid’s room with a wall of shelving around a bed and incorporating a desk.

CD: Absolutely. We have more on order for our offices, and just installed a final wall of them in the clay studio. As I mentioned, these are easy to install, and the lead times are quick.

How has this item made your job easier?

CD: Regarding our ceramic studio, we have grown considerably in the past two years. Having a reliable, cost-effective, handsome solution to our storage and day-to-day needs has been a relief. We have been able to move the systems as we have expanded and added to it seamlessly.

How might someone not in your line of work benefit from this item?

KD: Rakks has a large inventory of modular shelving systems and supports, and the basic components are inexpensive. If you’re a DIY type of person, this product is easy to incorporate into your own space.

CD: Or you make your partner do it.

What, if anything, would you change about this item?

KD: The ability to custom color the standards and brackets.

CD: It would be helpful for Rakks to supply a small bottle of touch-up paint with each order. Even the best of us can’t avoid scratches.

Are there any care/use tips someone considering this item should know about?

CD: Use a stud-finder and a good level, and when installing, measure and drill twice. Make sure to drill a pilot hole prior to screwing the standards in, or the paint on the screws will strip with too much force. Measure the locations for the heights of the shelves and level them with blue tape prior to setting the brackets. And enjoy them—with care, you will have them forever.
