Red Heart Super Saver is a worsted weight acrylic yarn by Coats and Clark. Use Red Heart Super Saver yarn for crocheting, knitting, and many other crafts.

Here's my assessment of Red Heart Super Saver yarn, written from a crocheter's point of view.

Specifications

  • Fiber Content: 100% Acrylic
  • Yarn Weight: Medium / Worsted
  • Suggested Crochet Hook Size: I / 9 (5.5 mm.)
  • Gauge: 12 single crochet and 15 rows per 4 inches on size I hook
  • Where to Buy Red Heart Super Saver Yarn: One of the best things about this yarn is its wide availability. You can buy it at many big-box retailers, including Joann craft stores, Walmart, and others. It is also available for sale by many Internet retailers or you can visit the manufacturer's web site.

The Best Things

  • Fab color palette; this yarn comes in a dazzling variety of colors. Both solids and variegated colors are available.
  • Widely available
  • Machine washable; easy to care for
  • Inexpensive/affordable
  • Durable; considering the cheap price, the quality is better than you'd expect

The Downsides

  • Unpleasant to the touch; scratchy and not soft at all when you are crocheting with it.
  • Finished crochet projects need an application of fabric softener; they can be made to soften up considerably, but they're never going to feel like cashmere.
  • Feels synthetic.
  • Personally, I would not want to wear anything made with this yarn. Your mileage may vary.

More Thoughts on Red Heart Super Saver Yarn

People often say that this is a beginner's yarn, but I find it much more difficult to crochet with than a high-quality wool yarn. See the article "Which yarn should a beginner buy?" for more thoughts on that topic.

I crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver yarn for years, but in hindsight, I wish I had used nicer yarns for the projects I made.

If I had it to do over again, I'd skip buying this yarn and invest more in nicer fibers.

This is how I see it. Nowadays, if I am going to invest a substantial amount of time into a project, I'd rather use an exquisite yarn that is going to make a truly dazzling project. I find it worthwhile for my investment in yarn to match my investment in time spent. It takes just as long to crochet an alpaca scarf as it does an acrylic one; I'd be happier wearing the alpaca scarf.

If you're on a very tight budget, by all means, this yarn is a good option. In my experience, this yarn has generally been worth its asking price. While it's a good value for the money, I encourage you to seek out, and use, nicer fibers if you have the means to afford them.
