Red White and Blue Gummies are an easy, festive Fourth of July candy recipe. These chewy, flavorful gummies are the perfect warm-weather candy, and a great addition to any Independence Day party. Cut them into fun shapes with cookie cutters to make them more festive!

This recipe takes a while because there are chilling periods in between each layer, but most of the time is inactive "resting" time--the actual kitchen time is minimal! To speed up the process, you can be prepping the ingredients for the other layers while the candy is chilling in the refrigerator.

What You'll Need

  • For the Blue Layer:
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 3 oz package blue Jell-o (do not use sugar-free!)
  • 1 (1/4-oz) envelope unflavored gelatin
  • For the White Layer:
  • 2 tbsp unflavored gelatin (from about 2.5 envelopes)
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp coconut extract (optional)
  • For the Red Layer:
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 3 oz package red Jell-o (do not use sugar-free!)
  • 1 (1/4-oz) envelope unflavored gelatin

How to Make It

1. Line an 8x8-inch pan with foil, and spray the foil lightly with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Combine the ingredients for the blue gelatin layer in a medium bowl. Whisk them together, then let them sit at room temperature for 10 minutes to allow the gelatin to soak up the water and soften.

3. Microwave the bowl for 30 seconds, then whisk well. Microwave for another 30 seconds and stir. If the sugar has dissolved and the mixture looks clear and well-mixed, then pour it into the prepared pan. If not, microwave for another 10-15 seconds until all of the sugar and gelatin have dissolved into the water. Refrigerate the pan to set the gelatin, for about 20 minutes.

4. To make the white layer, combine the gelatin with 3 tablespoons of cold water in a small bowl, and whisk them together. Let them sit and soften for 5 minutes.

5. Combine the remaining 3 tbsp water, the sweetened condensed milk, and the sugar in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and it comes to a simmer.

6. Add the gelatin and whisk until the gelatin dissolves. Remove from the heat and add the coconut extract, if you're using it. The flavors of the other gelatin will overwhelm the coconut a bit, so it's optional—but you can use it if the thought of a flavorless white layer is unappealing to you. Pour the white gelatin over the blue gelatin in the pan, and refrigerate it for another 20 minutes to set.

7. Prepare the red gelatin layer the same way you prepared the blue, and pour it over the white layer. Refrigerate for 20 minutes once more.

8. Once set, remove the gelatin from the pan using the foil as handles. Cut into small squares, or use a cookie cutter to cut shapes from the gummies.

9. Store Red White and Blue Gummies in an airtight container at room temperature.
